Dempsey studied history at UC Berkeley and acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. There he performed as Leontes in The Winter's Tale, Malachi Stack in The Matchmaker, and Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard.
His background in theatre is extensive and has received critical acclaim. He performed in Mr. Roberts at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Other credits include Edmund in Long Day's Journey Into Night on Broadway, John Brown in John Brown Now at the Lobby Theatre, and Bobby Kennedy in Women and Criminals off-Broadway.
Michael Dempsey joined Guiding Light on November 4, 2005, in the role of Alan-Michael Spaulding.
He has also appeared in numerous other shows such as The Grapes of Wrath, in One Life to Live and in several independent films.

When Dempsey has free time, he enjoys boxing and aikido. He was a California Lacrosse All-Star at Berkeley in 1995.
