Jackson's mom brings a ground-breaking surgery to the hospital, there's an emergency with Zola, and Bailey juggles two men.
At home, Meredith sorts clothes that won't fit Zola when she's returned to them. Derek says they haven't heard from the social worker in weeks. Meredith invites him to help fold, but he walks away. Meredith goes downstairs and has a discussion with Lexie, who says Jackson arranged for her to visit Molly - the exact weekend his mother's coming to town. At their place, Owen and Christina flirt over their scrambled eggs.
At the hospital, Ben lets Bailey know he was staying away from her because she told him she was "held together by tape and glue," but now that she's held together by a male nurse, he won't. Richard comes by and asks Bailey to put Meredith on her trial - she won't.
The residents gather in the lecture area to hear Jackson's mother, a brilliant surgeon, speak. She appears and says she's going to change medical history today - who wants to join her. April raises her hand and screams. Jackson's mother calls in the male patient and announces she's doing the first penile transplant. She explains 'Ryan' underwent a full penilectomy due to cancer. Everyone wants in on the surgery. Jackson catches up with his mother and teases her. She grills him about Lexie. Mark steps in to question her about the surgery - she invites him to scrub in. They adjourn to the lab where the residents wishing to participate must prove themselves by stitching chicken cutlets - Jackson and Meredith win after Alex gets paged and leaves. They join Mark and Dr. Avery to confer with the patient before surgery.
In surgery, Bailey and Ben argue about her dating a nurse. Ben says she basically asked him to wait because she couldn't handle a relationship. Bailey insists what she's doing with Eli is different. She goes to check on Henry, who talks about the dinner party he and Teddy are having. Eli is there, and Bailey admits she forgot to invite him.
Alex and Arizona rush into a room where Zola lies on a bed - she's had a seizure. The social worker warns Alex not to call Meredith and Derek - it could jeopardize their adoption. Alex encounters Derek in the x-ray room. Alex tells Christina about the situation. The baby seizes again and they both rush to her.
In the penile harvest surgery, Dr. Avery grills April about when she's going to have sex - she'll be a better surgeon if she does. After, Catherine Avery baits Richard about letting Jackson go into plastics. She flirts with him - he says he's still married.
In the penile transplant surgery, awkwardness ensues with Jackson and Mark when Catherine Avery grills Meredith about Lexie. Christina comes and takes Meredith out of the surgery. April replaces her. Catherine is livid when April ruins the dorsal vein. Mark impressively builds her a new one. They marvel as the penis turns pink. Post-op, the patient is happy. Catherine tells Mark he made a great save. Mark tells her Jackson couldn't do any better than Lexie Grey.
Raised voices come from a room as Derek and Meredith find out about Zola. Alex explains why he couldn't tell them, and everyone tries to stop Derek from trying to operate himself and ruining the adoption. Derek tells Owen privately that he can hardly look at Meredith - this is her fault. Owen says he can relate. Christina sits with Meredith. Once they learn the operation has gone well, Derek comforts a sobbing Meredith and Christina promises to stay with Zola. Derek and Meredith encounter the social worker on their way out. No words are exchanged. Owen watches Christina with Zola - she's great with her.
Richard approaches Bailey in the observation room to persuade her to put Meredith on her trial. Bailey shares that she's using a man as a plaything. Richard is alarmed at the turn in the conversation. Bailey still won't take Meredith. She tells Teddy she has to break up with Eli. Teddy begs her not to do it at the dinner party.
Leaving the hospital, Bailey stops Eli, who guesses that she's ending their relationship. He kisses her cheek and tells her to enjoy the party. Ben comes by and Bailey tells him what happened, but insists it had nothing to do with him. Ben leaves grinning.
At the bar, Catherine sets April up with a young man, and then ribs Jackson about shipping Lexie off. She also warns him that Mark talks about Lexie the way he should. She asks if he loves her. Jackson beams.
At Teddy and Henry's dinner party, Arizona asks Callie for a paper that says Sophia is hers - she calls her momma. Callie promises.
Christina phones Meredith and Derek at home and lets them sing to Zola.
I enjoyed tonight's episode from beginning to end. Bailey's personal life is always interesting, Dr. Catherine Avery was a great character, and the emergency with Zola provided some nail-biting moments. It was also full of great lines and moments such as Owen watching Christina with Zola. How cute was Jackson's face when his mom asked if he loves Lexie?!
