Emotional shootout.

"Grey's Anatomy" executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, recently spoke to TV Line about what viewers could expect to see in the upcoming season finale, which will air on Thursday May 19. She teased, "Last year, we had a gunman...This year, there’s an emotional shootout when the season is done, and Meredith, Alex and Cristina are not left unwounded." Shonda alluded to unexpected things happening for many of the characters, and also mentioned possible consequences for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) with respect to the switch she pulled in the Alzheimer's clinical trial on the April 28 episode.

The other big question this season is that of who will become Chief Resident. Shonda admits there was a lot of debate behind-the-scenes about which character would get the nod, saying, "We had big arguments about who should be Chief Resident, and part of it really came down to what we wanted the story to be going forward and where all our characters needed to be at the end of the season."
