    Saturday Night Glee-ver.

    Tuesday, April 17 2012
A Vocal Adrenaline student seeks help from Kurt and Mercedes, Finn makes a decision, and Will motivates the kids through the 1977 "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack.

In class, a daydreaming Blaine bursts into a performance of "You Should Be Dancing" by the Bee Gees. Will realizes that a lot of his students currently have no true direction for their future. Sue suggests that Will motivate the kids with a soundtrack that defined a generation, "Saturday Night Fever." Meanwhile, a Vocal Adrenaline student approaches Mercedes and Kurt for advice about dealing with his sexuality, claiming that he wants to go onstage at Regionals and perform in a dress and high heels. The two talk him out of it. Later, Will and Sue introduce the disco idea to a hesitant New Directions group. When Will introduces a dance-off competition for a suit like that of John Travolta, the kids get into the spirit. Will and the gang sing the Bee Gees' "Night Fever" while everyone disco dances. The three finalists for the suit are Santana, Mercedes and Finn.

Later, Will explains to the finalists that the dance-off wasn't really about John Travolta's suit, but about recognizing the students who need to decide what they want to do after graduation. Mercedes takes offense to this and performs The Trammps' "Disco Inferno" to prove that she's got fire. Following the performance, she reveals that her dream for the future is to move to Los Angeles to record number one hit songs like Aretha, Whitney and Mariah. She shares her worry that she's not good enough to make it in the real world. Elsewhere, Finn tells Puck that he doesn't know what his dream for the future is, but that it doesn't involve starting a pool-cleaning business in Los Angeles. In Sue's office, Sue tells Mercedes and Kurt that they need to approach the Vocal Adrenaline student and re-convince him to wear a dress and heels on stage. This will likely cause the group to tank onstage, thus creating an easier challenge for New Directions at Nationals.

Back at glee practice, Santana performs "If I Can't Have You" by the Bee Gees. She reveals that her dream isn't to fight for gay marriage equality, but to achieve fame. Will laments that fame isn't something the kids should be aspiring for, but Santana insists that she will be famous one day. Later, Rachel tells Finn that if he doesn't want to go to New York, they won't go to New York. She tells Finn that she wants them to go, but not until they give Finn's dream an equal chance. She sings to Finn "How Deep Is Your Love" by the Bee Gees. Later, the couple visits with Emma and Will to discuss options for Finn's future, though he still doesn't seem to know what he wants to do. When Will and Finn are alone, Finn confides in Will that he feels unqualified to do anything with his life. Will tells Finn that he shouldn't be scared of broken dreams, but instead be cautious about not daring to dream at all.

Elsewhere in McKinley, a mortified Santana discovers that Brittany posted their sex tape on the internet for all to see. Brittany explains that this was her way of helping Santana achieve her goal of being famous. Santana wants Brittany to take the video down but Brittany won't hear any of it. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Kurt go to a Regionals performance to stop the Vocal Adrenaline student from going onstage in heels and a dress. To the dismay of coach Jesse St. James, the boy goes onstage dressed in drag and performs "Boogie Shoes" by KC and the Sunshine Band. Back at McKinley, Finn meets with Rachel and says that nothing in his life works without her. He performs "More Than a Woman" by the Bee Gees and then reveals the good news that he's applied to "The Actor's Studio" in New York. He says he's no longer scared of failing thanks to Rachel's love and support. Later, Mercedes receives some good news of her own from Sam, who has posted on YouTube a video of her singing "Disco Inferno." She's quickly becoming an internet sensation. Santana receives news that she's been accepted for a full cheerleading scholarhip at the University of Louisville. The New Directions kids celebrate their success with a group performance of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

    Mario's Mutterings:

I was not at all looking forward to this disco-themed "Saturday Night Fever" version of "Glee," but tell me that the cast didn't absolutely kill it! I found myself pretty enthralled in the episode, loving each of the performances and appreciating the struggle of Mercedes, Santana and (especially) Finn as they searched for answers about their future. Call me crazy, but there's got to be some kind of kink awaiting Finchel's plans to go to New York. It's all too perfect, now, so something's got to give. And can anyone please tell me the purpose of the Vocal Adrenaline drag queen? Something tells me this wasn't just a Ryan Murphy ploy to raise awareness about LGBT rights...

Great recap. I think it was a ploy - the VA drag queen. :P It could have been executed better!

I loved this episode, Mercedes sang Disco Inferno so well. I too was confused by the Drag Queen part-didn't really seem to fit in, but the guy had an awesome voice. I can't wait for next week's Whitney Houston episode.
