Outside McKinley High, Mercedes dishes to the girls about her summer fling with Sam while Sam does the same with the guys. The group performs "Summer Nights" from the musical "Grease." Back inside, Becky decides that she has a crush on Artie and will ask him on a date. In the staff room, Coach Beiste reveals that she and Cooter Menkins eloped over the Christmas break. Emma, worried that Will will never propose to her, sings "Wedding Bell Blues" by The 5th Dimension. Later, Will excitedly tells the glee kids that he's actually going to propose to Emma and that he needs their help! Back in the hallway, Sam tells Mercedes that they should reconnect but Mercedes reminds him that she's already dating someone else. Thinking that having a letterman jacket will help his chances in winning back Mercedes, Sam decides to join the school's synchronized swimming team.
Becky asks Artie on a date so he invites her to come watch him at glee practice. While there, Artie and Mike tell Will that he needs to use his rock-star hips to propose to Emma. They perform a mash-up of "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones. Following practice, Becky lets Artie know that she's expecting more to their date and invites him out to Breadstix. Later, while picking out a ring for Emma, Finn accepts Will's invitation for Finn to be his best man. In conversation, Finn reveals that he's interested in joining the army after high school so he can do something special like his father did. Back at school, the girls give Will advice about how he should propose to Emma. Led by Rachel, they perform "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack. After singing the song, Mercedes realizes that she is still in love with Sam.
Will visits Mr. and Mrs. Pillsbury and and asks for their permission to propose marriage to Emma. Much to Will's dismay, Emma's parents don't give their blessing. Back at glee practice, Artie reveals to his friends that he's actually been enjoying his time with Becky. When they remind him that she's on Sue's side, Artie takes offense and says that they don't know what it's like for him to find someone to love. Later, Finn is approached by his mom, Burt, Will and Emma. They commend Finn on thinking about going to war but also remind him of the associated dangers. When Finn reveals that he wants to be a hero like his father, Finn's mom admits that his dad didn't actually die at battle, but overdosed on drugs after becoming mentally ill. The news evidently crushes Finn.
In the hall, Artie is disturbed when Becky walks past him and says that she wants to have sex this weekend. Meanwhile, Will is asked by a confused Emma if he actually wants to be with her. Will devastates Emma when he admits that he wants to marry her but worries about how she'll handle kids some day with her condition. At Breadstix, Kurt and Rachel tell Finn that they seem to have no chance of getting into a New York school, while Finn is busy mulling over his dad. Rachel sings "Without You" by David Guetta and Usher. Back at glee practice, Will admits to his students that he needs more time before proposing to Emma. Sam tells Will that he has the perfect idea for Will's proposal.
Will picks Emma up in her office and leads her into the hallway. She is handed white roses from various people on their way to the school's swimming pool. Emma is shocked to find the entire glee club singing “We Found Love” by Rihanna while performing a series of synchronized swims. Will shows up dressed in a white suit, gets down on one knee, and tells Emma that she has always been the one for him. He says he will always be there for her to help clean up “the mess,” and that she will do the same for him. Will proposes marriage and Emma accepts while the kids cheer them on. Later, Becky is upset when Artie breaks off their relationship, knowing that he couldn't handle dating someone with Down syndrome. Sue finds out and tells Becky that she will help her through it. Meanwhile, Finn meets Rachel in the auditorium and says that loving her is the only thing that keeps him going. He pulls out a ring, gets down on one knee, and asks for her hand in marriage!
If you weren't giddy through "Glee's" comeback episode, then something is seriously wrong with you! "Glee" popped back onto the scene tonight while several characters popped the question, but one inquiry still remains unanswered. Will Rachel actually say, "Yes?" If I have it my way, and I know you're going to kill me, Rachel will not give Finn her hand in marriage. Call me crazy, but I've always stuck by the notion that the chase is so much more rewarding than the catch. If Rachel accepts Finn's offer, what's next? A wedding? Big deal. I want me some soapy goodness, and the chase is where it's at! For the love of God, Rachel, just say, "No!"
