In the hallway, Sue informs Will that she has been appointed principal since Figgins has fallen ill with a virus, and that her first item of business is to take down the glee club. Later in the day, Will also goes home sick after he starts hallucinating that his students are miniature versions of themselves. At home, his ex-wife Terri visits and tries to take care of him, but he doesn't want any part of it. She gives him a copy of "Singin' In The Rain," his favorite movie to watch while he's sick.
In Spanish class, the students enjoy their substitute teacher, Miss Holly Holliday (Gwyneth Paltrow). Kurt, knowing from a previous encounter that she is a good singer, asks her to take over glee club in Will's absence. Miss Holliday accepts and immediately calls the club out on their final-place finish at Regionals. She advises them to pick more contemporary songs in order to win. The students are impressed that she, unlike Will, is allowing them to have any input. Holliday wows them with a performance of the modern hit, "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green.
In the locker room, Principal Sue tries to push around Coach Beiste but Beiste stands strong. Embarrassed by her inability to abuse her power, Sue decides to ban tater-tots from the school cafeteria. Meanwhile, Mercedes feels burned by Kurt who always seems too busy with Blaine. Kurt admits to enjoying spending time with his new friend, but denies that they are dating. Mercedes, upset with Kurt and also flabbergasted by the banning of tater-tots, decides to rebel by shoving tater-tots in the exhaust pipe of Sue's vehicle.
At home, Will has a dream that he and Mike are performing "Make 'Em Laugh" from "Singin' In The Rain." When he wakes up, Rachel visits and informs him that Miss Holliday is a threat because all the kids love her. At school, Rachel has an encounter with Miss Holliday, who tells Rachel that she is too uptight and needs to loosen up with a fun song. In the auditorium, Miss Holliday and Rachel perform "Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag" from the musical "Chicago." Meanwhile, Will is visited again by Terri. He feels uncomfortable with her advances as she rubs menthol on his naked body. Eventually, the two start to kiss.
Back at school, Mercedes rejects Kurt's offer to set her up with one of the football players, feeling he's only setting them up because they are both Black. Despite still being sick, Will returns to McKinley where Sue informs him that Figgins has been fired and that she is the new principal. As her first item of business, Sue fires Will. In disbelief, Will visits Holly and calls her out on taking over his job. Holly tells him that the difference between her and Will is that she's better able to relate to the kids on their level.
Later, Sue tries to punish Mercedes for her misdeed and Holly makes light of the whole situation, much to Sue's disgust. Holly visits Will at his house and admits that she is a terrible teacher for being so relaxed with the students. She explains that she used to be more structured in her job until she had a run-in with a violent student. Terri shows up and causes a scene, claiming to be Will's wife. Will says that Terri is his ex-wife, and then apologizes to Terri for misleading her over the past few days. He asks her to leave the house and to not come back.
Back at school, Kurt tells Mercedes that her obsession with tater-tots is worrying him. He feels she is focusing on food to make up for feeling inadequate without a boyfriend. Mercedes admits to those feelings and agrees to pursue the football player that Kurt had mentioned earlier. Later, Kurt’s bully approaches him and threatens to kill Kurt if he ever reveals that the two shared a kiss.
Will meets with Sue, who tells him that the kids have stepped forward to plead for Will to come back as their teacher. He is reinstated as a teacher at McKinley under the condition that his glee kids fix the damage done to her car by Mercedes. The students are happy to have him back but admit that they miss Miss Holliday's fresh ideas, especially when Will suggests to the kids that they perform “Singin' In The Rain." Will gets the kids' message and recruits Miss Holliday to help make their performance more modern. The entire gang comes together to perform a mash-up of "Singin'In The Rain" and "Umbrella" by Rihanna and Jay-Z.
The long-awaited debut of Gwyneth Paltrow on "Glee" has arrived, and I absolutely thought that she rocked every single minute of it! The performances were quite good, with my favorite being the final mash-up of "Singin' In The Rain" and "Umbrella." The best part of Gwyn's guest appearance is that it wasn't just a publicity stunt; her Holly character has actually helped set the stage for future episodes. With Paltrow scheduled for more appearances on the show, could it be that there's a future in store for Holly and Will? Emma fans look out - I think Will may have found himself a new love interest!
