    Happy 4th Of July Everyone!!!!!!

    *Weekend Discussion*

The topic of slandering characters names was brought up on this board recently and some felt it was against the board rules, or too excessive, or mean.
Just this week we've had one character refer to another by a rather unflattering name.
We had Morgan refer to Levi as Kangaroo Ken.
Nina seems to be filling the void left by Luke, and just in one episode came out with three of her pet names for characters.
Rafe - Coke Head Nephew/Now also Baby Killer
    Kiki -Dippy Love Child
    Sam - Trailer Trash Mistress

We know Dr.O has her choice of names for Anna, Liz, Duke. Britt and Felix are guilty as well, but It doesn't end with the name bashing. One character bashing another is also common, AJ was insulted on a regular basis about his weight, Liz' porcelain skin is often referenced.

This topic is NOT meant to attack any poster that is opposed to the alternate unflattering names other posters use, or vice versa, those who do have pet names for characters, but rather, just to gage viewers opinion on the use of such measures on the show, especially in light of this site's guidelines for posting.

Do you find this kind of slandering/character bashing on GH amusing?
Does it depend on which character it is aimed at? Someone you like or dislike?
Are you not bothered by it at all?
If we continue to see the use of such slandering/character bashing on the show, should the board rules become null and void, or revised in some manner?
Would you like to see this practice of slandering/character bashing end, both on the board, and on the show?
Do you think this type of bashing by characters on the show is the most realistic aspect to real life?

Looking forward to reading your opinions on this topic.

Casey1 ~ I find the use of pet nicknames more annoying than anything. For one thing, it makes it very confusing for new posters who don't know what character is being talked about. Some are more offensive than others. Recently a poster used a very unflattering adjective to describe Liz and it was commented by other posters as not the type of language to use on this board. I agreed with that and reported it to soap admin and they removed that post.
As to the writers having the characters bash each other, I think it is lazy writing and their attempt at humor. Things like Kangaroo Ken and Hippy Dippy for Levi are fairly benein, and rather descriptive of the character. Some of the posters have pet names for some of the characters and mean it in good fun. I don't think the current writing team is going to change what they are doing, they seem very proud of the product they are putting on. I don't know if this answers all your questions, but that's my take on it.
The worst language I have seen is over on the message boards for the Daytime Dish where foul language and character bashing goes on and on everyday.

Casey- in regards to pet names, kind and malicious ones, I don’t have a problem, and actually find some to be quite clever. I personally rarely use them, but see no harm as these are fictional characters. Someone equated using such names as bullying in real life, I strongly disagree. I could be wrong, but I always assume everyone is an adult on this board. We all most likely have friends we don’t always agree with, rather it be politics, raising children, etc. It doesn’t mean we don’t respect their opinions. I would need to be blind if I was to say I wasn’t aware of a certain poster dislike for Liz and the effect it has on many posters. As with everyone, I believe she has a right to present her views of who she likes and doesn’t. I find it harmless. I’m against any form of censorship, and truly believe if you find someone to be constantly offensive, just skip his or hers comments.

Lovesdogs980...Thanks for your response. For the most I don't mind pet names that are thrown around on the message board, the incident you mentioned would be the exception. Like you, I'm against the use of offensive words or terms to describe the characters.
I don't mind the use of squish names for couples like, Lante, Cranco, Spixie etc. However, I can see how using such names to refer to a couple, or pet names for characters, could be confusing to new viewers to GH, but if one asks for clarification, someone will always answer their questions.
While character bashing on the board can take a life of its own, and sometimes taken to the extreme, I chalk that up to the passion one feels about it, and is not against the board rules. Character bashing, and the hot topic of the day, often provide the most interest, and participation on the board, so I don't mind.

On the show though, I don't care for one character bashing another, the use of derogatory words, especially when they are new characters throwing around insults on another's past dealings, or when I think it veers too close to being a personal attack on the actor/actress, like the weight jokes about AJ, or Liz' pale skin.
I think using these tactics is lazy writing as you mentioned, as they are usually terms or descriptions taken off any message board, and often instigates the rivalries between fan bases.

Casey-- I've never had a problem with most of the pet names ascribed to some actors/actresses. But I don't enjoy it when it gets really nasty. Anyone can devolve into the abyss by being anonymous. I realize everyone has their likes & dislikes, and all posters have the right to their opinions. Just as I have the right to skip on past the ones who constantly bash just to be bashing. To not like a character is one thing, but to go on a daily rant is not enjoyable reading for me. I come here to get other's views and reasons they feel the way they do. Sometimes I see a side to a character I didn't notice before. But for the most part it's all good.

Poodles...Thanks for your response. I think we're on the same page. As adults we should be able to gage when our words could be considered offensive, or deliberately bating to get a rise out of the members, and censor ourselves.

Posted by lovesdogs980 at Saturday, July 05 2014 05:16 PM

Casey1 ~ I don't consider the squish names for couples offensive or pet names so much as shorthand to talk about the couple. Like using Lante instead of writing Dante and Lulu. I do think it's lazy writing when the characters resort to name calling to put someone down rather than have an adult conversation.
We all have our favorites and our own POV about how they act but we can be adults and not resort to name calling and character bashing when we discuss it.

Bastardization of character names is clearly against the guidelines as is marking spoilers and actor bashing.
When you sign on to this board you are doing it with the understanding of the rules. To only abide by the rules the apply to you and ignore the ones you don't find important is disrecptable to the mods and your fellow posters.
I don't care about spoilers so, would it be ok if I just wrote whatever I read or do I mark it because it's part of the rules ?

They give the example of Puke for Luke and we see that kind of thing daily.

Bayoubtr...Thank you. By now I think you can tell that these *topics* are just another way to keep the conversation going, and like you, I enjoy reading everyone's opinions, and respect them even if I don't always agree with them.

Hope you had a great 4th of July.
