From what I gleaned from the many articles and interviews with the writers and with Kimberly McCollough herself around the time of her original departure from the show, the means of her exit were changed and altered several times before they came up with what we saw play out on screen.

Kimberly's express desire was to have Robin die an unambiguous death for two reasons. First, she didn't want to be dogged for the rest of her career with questions of “When are you returning to GH?” from either fans, or from her peers in the business. She felt if that was always hanging over her head, that it would limit the opportunities that may be offered to her. Plus, it would be a major pain in the butt to have to answer that question all the time.

Secondly, she didn't want anyone else to play the part she created and played since she was a child. She claimed it was mostly because she felt she owed that to her fans, but I got the distinct impression that it was also in the back of her mind that a recast would REALLY close the door forever to her return to the show, even if it was many years down the road, and worse, that a recast might make the role her own (like Laura Wright did with Carly) and be even MORE popular with the fans, but that's mostly speculation on my part.

As I understand it, the original plan was to have Robin succumb to AIDS, and we saw parts of that storyline play out when Lisa tampered with Robin's meds. That was why Robin made those convenient “in case I'm dead” DVD's for Patrick, encouraging him to move on, because she thought she WAS dying. However, at the last minute, TPTB decided that Robin's death from AIDS would invalidate her long, valiant struggle against the disease, and damage her image as an example to everyone that being HIV positive is NOT a death sentence, so they nixed that particular exit strategy, sending the writers scrambling to come up with an alternative while Kimberly was still available.

That's when they came up with the lab explosion idea, writing it into the plot surrounding Jason's Brain Cramps. Now, Robin was intended to be the victim of an accident caused by a series of coincidences and an unfortunate confluence of events that resulted in her tragic, but unavoidable death, with really no one to blame. Everyone seemed satisfied with that solution for a time. The writers outlined the story, up to and including Robin's funeral, and put it on the production schedule, as they fine tuned the scripts. That was when word came down from someone high up in the network that they didn't approve of the idea of killing off a legacy character in such a way that any future recast would be impossible. At that point, all the writers were trying to accomplish was to leave themselves some wriggle room that would allow for Robin to have somehow survived an explosion in a sealed lab. That forced the writers to throw in the part about the “body burned beyond recognition,” which only amounted to adding a couple of lines but unfortunately, they didn't have time to change anything else to make the kidnapping scenario more plausible because at the time they had no idea that they were going to have to write a kidnapping scenario down the road. They would worry about filling in the details later, if and when they had to.

Now, they have to, which is why today, we're being subjected to this far-fetched, and for the most part unexplained storyline about how Robin survived, and what she's been doing all this time. I can't put all, or even most of the blame for this convoluted mess on the writers because I don't think this is the story they wanted to write in the first place. This was all forced on them by circumstances beyond their control, and now they're trying their hardest to make the best of a bad situation.

It's like putting lipstick on a pig. It can be done, but at the end of the day, it's still a pig.

Jumps- it would be my opinion that one might pay to have a more desireable name- you certainly wouldn't be prone to get into a great medical school with the surname of either of Britta's parents.

Scrimmage-- You knew perfectly well your post would draw me back in, even though my long awaited soak is calling. I agree about the convoluted storyline regarding Robin. And I also think the Obrecht/Faison thing is totally ridiculous. But the inevitable can of worms is open and the writers are ready to run with it. Also, the door is open for... wait for it, wait for it...

bayou - It's bow hunting season right now. The SO and their hunting club have land owner crop damage permits to use their black powder guns which are recognized by the state to control the deer population. The SO also has a permit issued by the state agency (our neighbor) to use his shotgun to control the deer population. I'm just happy that I get a free weekend with my cat. Happy soaking.

Lily & Poodles........Congrats on the Bears win!!!

Been a busy week and the company network has been up and down.......IT and Security has really been earning their money lately. They're updating this weekend and I hope this solves the issues we've had this week!

I've missed you all too! Hope I can get back to posting on a regular basis! Thanks for the Ravens shout out! The injured are back in play.....I think Jacoby will be playing this Sunday! Hope so!! My team picked up Eugene Monroe from the Jags and he has been putting in a lot of time getting himself acclimated. He says he's ready to play this Sunday! That would be great! The "O" line needs someone really good to help protect Flacco! He's been getting knocked around too much!

This Sunday should be a really good game!

GO SAINTS AND LSU!!!! Hope you have a great weekend too!!!

BTW........I'm with you totally on Victor Newman getting taken down a few pegs!! He's been acting worse than he normally does! I wish SB's Dylan would kick Victor's butt Jason style!!!

Have a great night all! Will be back this weekend!

Why did no one think anything was wrong with the 40ish Olivia and early 20's Johnny Z having a hot relationship, but 40ish Ava and 19 year-old Morgan is disgusting? If I remember rightly, Johnny was either the same age or slightly younger than Dante.

Burnt beyond recognition is soap talk for , they aren't dead.

Same with when a body is not recovered.

I'm glad Robin is making time for her GH fans. She's a talented actress that wants to spread her wings. Why shouldn't she?
This is a fun s/l for me because of all the people Robin is connected to.
I'm glad to have her back for however much time she has to give.
Would like James Franco to do the same.

So looking forward to her reunion with her family. Going to be great! And Sabrina's reaction too. Soapy goodness. Also Robin's reaction to Britt should be interesting.

For me, having a veteran actress not leave the show is a gift to her fans.

OT: HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all our Canadian fans.
Dex, Casey1, Tipsy , and i'm sure i'm leaving many out.
Do you guys have "black friday" shopping like we do?
Expect our mall to be packed today! Great for Buffalo !

Happy Columbus Day to the rest of us.

Dare I say....GO BILLS? Going to be our third home game with perfect weather!

    Have a great weekend everyone,
