Scrimmage I agree to give new characters time but my feelings about Carlos is due soley to the fact he will not take no for an answer from Sabrina. She has told him to leave her alone and it is over but this seems to just make him more agressive in his pursuit.

bayou- agree with your Nik comments completely. Brit does not deserve him!

I am in GH heaven after seeing that beautiful smile and hearing "hello Darling" welcome back Robert!!

Scrimmage....Wow, you are a fountain of information from plutonium poisoning to TV stereotypes.

Hi Ransomha...it is good to see positive posts on GH.
    OT...How was the wedding?

Bayoubtr...I feel the same about Britt and Nik, not totally sure they will be a couple, merely just a way to insert Nik into the baby reveal if Ben ends up being Lante's or related to Nik in some crazy way.

Sfcom...I want to repeat once again that in my case I'm not making fun of the way Sabrina says Carrrlos's name, I actually like it and think it makes him more interesting.

ot Akita I appreciate your comments that all Latinos are not dark etc. I am ashamed to admit I did not know that. Before gh my only impression of Cubans etc was Ricky Riccado from I love Lucy so I guess the impression for me goes back many years.

ot Ranshoma and bayoubtr Rans you read my mind I was going to ask about Roberts accent when Mac does not have one then I also thought about Jerry and Jax at times I can not understand what Jerry is saying.

Bayou thanks for the information on Robert and Macs accents.

is the storm getting weaker and not a threat to you now?

    OT:

4ever-- The storm has been downgraded, but hasn't turned east yet. We're getting a lot of rain, but it's from a cold front pushing down--not the storm. Hope you enjoy the birthday festivities!

Casey-- Great quiz, but I only have one sure answer right now, but I'm still working on it.

It was a long time ago, but I think Mac showed up in PC around the time that Robert and Anna were presumed dead in the boat explosion.

I completely agree with that statement, however if we’re talking specifically about GH, I don't believe there's as much of a problem as you seem to think. Carrllos doesn't strike me as particularly dark, and I don't know why anyone would consider him “greasy” or “oily.” Yeah, he's got a pretty good head of hair on him, and his beard is seriously thick, but I don't think they're gluing it on him, or adding extra product to his hair to make him appear more ethnic. I could be wrong, but I think that's just the way the actor looks. As far as I can tell, Sonny's the only guy sporting a 10W-30 hairstyle on the show, and he's been doing that for years. It has nothing to do with his ethnicity.

Sabrina is certainly neither dark nor oily, and her complexion is a fair as Elizabeth's. Her accent is indistinguishable, unless she wants to emphasize certain Spanish words, and the way she is portrayed on the show is far removed from what I would consider a stereotypical Hispanic woman. An example of that would be Sofia Vergara on ABC's “Modern Family.” Her portrayal of a Colombian woman as a “hot blooded, voluptuous, Latina spitfire” who regularly mis-pronounces English words for comedic effect, is a perfect example of a common stereotype we've seen in the media since Carmen Miranda first wore fruit on her head, and Charo introduced the term “cuchi-cuchi” to American audiences. Although Ms. Vergara's portrayal of her character verges on broad parody, no one seems particularly offended by it because apparently she's just playing herself, and she has been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards for doing so. She must be doing something right.

Over the years, other Hispanic characters on GH have been cast against type as well. Ted King, who is NOT Hispanic, and could hardly be considered “swarthy,” played the twin Alcazar brothers Luis and Lorenzo. The fine actor who played another set of twins, the tattooed killer Manny Ruiz, and his brother the priest, was very scary, and obviously Hispanic, but he was also very unique in his look. Lily Rivera was a lovely, admirable person, whose ethnicity had nothing to do with her character, and I don't see how anyone could possibly consider Ricky Martin's portrayal of Miguel as stereotypically offensive in any way.

I would conclude that overall, General Hospital has been fairly conscientious in avoiding stereotypes when casting, or in the way they depict ethnic characters. Personally, I'd give them a “A” in that category, but that's just my opinion.

Where I think they often DO fall short of the mark is in the way they portray gay men as either extremely flamboyant or obsessed with sex, and I can't help but notice that for some reason, there's never been one lesbian character on the show as far as I can remember. Not that I'm calling for one, I just think it's worth mentioning.

4evergh – I meant I'm willing to give the new guy some time to settle in on the show and get his feet under him before I make any judgments on how good of an actor he is, or how well he's playing the part. I've already pretty much decided that I'm not going to like Carrllos as a character, but I still want to see good acting, even from the bad guys.
