That's exactly my point. You're READING about this human tragedy that touches us all. There are any number of places where we can find the stories that interest us if we wish, but news is by definition “new” information, and there's been no “breaking news” in the last several hours that would justify disrupting the normal broadcast schedule for weeks to come. I couldn't care less that I'll have to wait a few days to see a new episode of GH, but eight hours of regurgitating the same talking points, and showing the same video clips interspersed with a lot of pure speculation does nothing to serve the victims or the public interests, and as others have pointed out, the excessive coverage, and the rush to get things on the air without all due deliberation and proper fact checking can create confusion instead of clarity, and in some cases, actually hinder the prosecution of the guilty.

Certainly the situation is different in the Boston area, and warrants regular updates from the local media in the interests of public safety, but the national news coverage has degenerated into nothing more than a feeding frenzy in the competition between rival news organizations.

Yes, this is a national tragedy, and yes it's a big story, but this is NOT on the same level as 9/11, or Hurricane Katrina, despite the ratings hungry networks efforts to make it seem like it is. This is EXACTLY what the terrorists want – for us to exaggerate their ability to do us harm, and to disrupt our daily lives in fear of what they may do next. The networks are playing right into their hands.

    Off topic:

maja, I couldn't agree more w/ you. GH being pre-empted is the least of our problems. I've woken up this morning and put CNN on and I realise nothing has changed but it's riveting and it's also breaking news. Working in the news/tv industry myself, that's how it works.

What I do think is wrong is that this sociopath may be watching these news breaks himself in hiding. This is hindering the search for him.

Well, I'm off to enjoy my morning latte then I'm going mattress shopping today. Oh how fun NOT!

Well, still up to the Bs so hi beenaroundlongtime.

    ************OFF TOPIC - DENTIST***************

Well Bayou I am now back from the dentist. I decided to use your name as someone the office may know and felt that perhaps you had some influence in that field. Their response was: "BAYOU ?? BAYOU ??? Oh you mean the trouble maker better known as the instigator - yes we know her - that is her WANTED PICTURE on the wall" Those are their words not mine - obviously I didn't get my sucker.

    ****************OFF TOPIC-NEWS COVERAGE*****************

I have been watching CNN too, because I WANT TO....and am trying to keep up-to-date......There is relatively nothing new to report. Having been in Military Intelligence I can tell you that during that time frame....the newspapers were reporting one thing whereas we KNEW that was far from the truth.....IF the authorities do it right they will NOT let any important information out to the media until something of significance takes place. With all the access that terrorists have to TV-internet-social media now THAT is VITAL.......For those that would rather wait until that SIGNIFICANT event takes place they should be able to watch their regular programming with BREAK-INS when necessary.

If ABC thinks THE CHEW fits that category then PP may get the best of them at that.
