4ever - I know I can't say anything to comfort you about the loss of Susie, but you know her spirit will always be a part of her home. All I can say is that she's running free now.

ot susie I know some people probably think we are crazy to spend a week trying to lay a horse to rest.

Susie was abused, beaten and half starved when we got her 30 years ago. She was 2 years old. Hubs promised her she would have a home in the pasture forever. She was queen of the pasture. If the kids wanted to go to the pond to fish there she was checking out their tackle box. No matter who came into her pasture she had to check it out.
She and our yellow Lab survived two tornados in 2008 that tore their pens down and the roof off our house, how they lived thru it we dont know.

She just would not eat after she fell and could not get up. We tried for a week to get her to eat or drink. She survived the 1st snow storm, but then we noticed her leg was swollen 3 times larger than should be. Sunday Hubs told me with another storm coming in he made the decision to put her down so she would not suffer any more.

The vet gave her a shot to calm her down, she rested her head on my shoulder and to me it felt like it was a relief to her to prop her head up as she was so weak. She fought it to the end she had the heart of a 2 year old still. But the vet was very compassionate and she did not suffer.

It sucks to be an adult and have to make a live or die decision but we knew and the vet confirmed she could not survive another storm which was coming in Sunday night.

The vet helped hubs roll her into the tractor bucket and when he got her to the house and layed her down our lab Sam came up to her and licked her nose, mouth and ears. I really lost it then, it was as though he was trying to make his buddy better

4ever - I know a bit of what you are going through losing Susie. Back in 1984 I lost a horse that I had had since I was a teenager at 28 years. He suffered a dog bite which turned into blood poisining. He lasted about a week and went down on a Sunday night. The Vet was off island until after 9 PM. He came and put him down. Then I had to find a person with a backhoe to come and bury him. It was very hard to lose him.
Bless Susie and you for caring for her and allowing her to live as long as she did.

ot Lily thank you my friend. Will be hard not to see her out in the pasture but so glad we could give her 30 years of freedom to roam after what she had been through.

ot Lovesdogs thank you. yes if it was not so wet (and with the drought I am grateful for the moisture) we could have had her buried by now. Hubs piled about 6' of snow on her to keep her but it is suppose to get to 50 tomorrow so my sil and hubs are still out there trying to get it taken care of.

so sorry you lost a horse also, I have also had horses since teenager but was not around when they passed this is the first one. I thought you had horses from all the suggestions you gave me, thank you again for that.

Genie Francis on the Chew I did get to watch at work this afternoon, it was really good and they showed a lot of flashbacks from GH was about the last 15 minutes of the show. She also said she has no idea what is going to happen to Luke and her as Ron keeps everything a secret.
