The Number One Topic Of Conversation.

    Friday, February 03 2012
Kate opens up to Sonny, Mac tries to numb the pain, and Delores is attacked.

At the penthouse, Sam tells Jason that waiting until tomorrow for the paternity results will be excruciating for her. Jason holds her as she expresses her fears over the pregnancy. Jason suggests they take it one step at a time and they will deal with the results when they get them. Sam gets a call from Kelly, who stops by with the results.

Diane gives Alexis a pep talk at Jake's about going through menopause. She encourages her to go to the bar and talk to Mac, who is leaving a message for Robin. Mac tells his niece he doesn't care if he's hovering. He just wants to know she's okay. Dante and Lulu say goodbye to Mac, who tells them to enjoy every minute of their life together. He downs his drink and orders another as Diane drags him over to Alexis. Diane tries to get the two of them chatting and Alexis heads to the bar. Coleman thinks there's a spark between her and Mac because she's blushing. She corrects him saying she's flushing. Coleman believes Mac is everything Alexis has been looking for but didn't know it. Coleman calls last call and then suggests he, Alexis, Diane and Mac have a rematch of strip pool. Diane tells him to rack 'em up. Alexis wants to leave, but Diane forces her to stay. After a drunken Mac gets down to his underwear, Diane notes he needs help getting home. Alexis tells Diane she's in no condition to take care of him. Diane takes Mac home and Coleman whispers to Alexis that she blew it.

A man grabs Delores outside Jake's. A car comes by and the man runs away after throwing Delores to the ground. As Dante and Lulu walk out of the bar, they find Padilla. She tells them it was the stripper attacker.

Olivia confronts Steve at the hospital about what's going on with him and Maggie. Maggie intervenes, saying she tried to see if there was anything still between them, but he turned her down. Olivia informs Steve she doesn't want to be with him if he's interested in Maggie, so he needs to let her know. Maggie apologizes for causing trouble and hopes she and Olivia can get past this. After she walks away, Olivia says she wants Steve to be hers, but she's not sure he is. She sees Dante and Lulu bringing Delores in. As Delores gets checked out, Olivia expresses her concerns over Delores' intentions towards Dante. Meanwhile, Maggie explains to Steve it's better for Olivia to think there's something going on between them than for her to know the truth.

In Chicago, Kate eventually admits to Sonny the man she has been meeting is a psychiatrist. Sonny wonders why she's been lying to him about it. She gets emotional as she explains how filled with fear she is. He wonders if her shrink knows about him. She responds that he is the number one topic of conversation. She tells him she's conflicted about things. Sonny wants them to work out but he doesn't want to be the reason she's in pain. She wants it to work between them and move on from the past, but it's difficult. They kiss and after Sonny falls asleep, Kate dresses up and heads out.

Ethan brings Cassandra to the Haunted Star. He gives her the history of the place and how he met Luke when he tried to rob it. He explains he brought her there to take her mind off things. He confesses he's falling in love with her. She urges him to stop because she is unstable. Ethan doesn't think who they were in the past matters. He wants to start over together. Ethan gets a message and says he has to go. She promises to be there when he gets back, but she's gone when Ethan returns.

Cassandra returns to Wyndemere where she encounters Helena, who is holding a knife.

Tomorrow's Port Charles spoilers for General Hospital:

Sonny is surprised to find Kate returning in the middle of the night.

Matt isn't fazed by Maxie's games.

Ethan is briefed on Cassandra's past.

Is Kate going to have a split personality?

Posted by Unicorn Girl at Friday, February 03 2012 01:20 PM

A psychiatrist???? This better be a lie Kate is spewing to throw Sonny off the trail. If not, that was a big letdown. And with the things going on with the folks on GH, Ewan and this "psychiatrist" are giving a noble profession a bad name.

Again Olivia? Did Delores beat herself up so Dante and Lulu could bring her to the hospital. Maybe SHE wants Delores for herself and that's why she's so fixated on her.

Coleman, why would Alexis want Mac when your fine behind is standing right there?

Jason/Sam....I swear the baby will be born before this couple catches a break and I don't even like them together as a couple.

“What we've got here is a failure to communicate.” - The Captain (Strother Martin) to Luke (Paul Newman) and other prisoners in Cool Hand Luke.

I think the question of whether or not Elizabeth is more manipulative than other characters on the show really depends on how you define “manipulate” (or “manippleate” as Sonny says it). The literal definition means to move by hand, or according to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary:

“to treat or operate with or as if with the hands or by mechanical means especially in a skillful manner”

But I believe we're concerned with a secondary definition:

“to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage”

NOW we're getting somewhere. There are any number of characters on GH whose actions could be described in that way on a regular basis. As Ransomha pointed out about Sam, we're all capable and probably guilty at times of trying to influence the behavior of others out of our own self-interests. It's just a question of degree or how far we're willing to go that's the difference. For me, her argument breaks down when she says that Sam no longer tries to manipulate anyone because she has everything she wants. If that were true than the Master Manipulator of them all, Edward Quartermaine, would be content to sit back and enjoy the fabulous wealth he has accumulated over his colorful lifetime. Instead, he tries to pull whatever strings he has within reach to either bring Michael into ELQ, or to cut Tracy out of it. It's just second nature to him by now after years of behind-the-scenes moving and shaking. The idea is to get others to do what you want by setting things up so that they can get what THEY desire only by falling in line. Edward wanted Michael to work at ELQ, so he made Abby's employment contingent on Michael joining the company. Manipulation of this type is not the same thing as whining or pouting to get you way, or more positively, trying to influence someone to “do the right thing” like not running off to join the circus (or the mob), or not doing drugs out of honest concern for their welfare. It's when someone takes advantage of another's better nature to insure their compliance in order to serve one's own agenda.

This is what Elizabeth does on a regular basis. She purposely used Lucky's affection and dedication to their children to get him to commit to another relationship with her, despite the fact that Lucky insisted over and over again that he thought that was a bad idea. She used Nikolas' feelings of guilt to keep him from telling his brother about their affair even though he insisted that they should be honest with him. Those are just a couple of familiar examples involving Liz, but she's certainly not lacking for company in that department.

Spinelli is manipulating FauxMaxie into accepting him as a roommate against her better judgment, by playing on her insecurity, her jealously over Matt's interest in Liz, and her recent paranoia about Anthony in the hopes that proximity will open her borrowed heart to him once again.

Maggie is manipulating Dr. Steve too. She's using his dedication as a doctor and the fact that they share a terrible secret to come between him and Oblivia in order to rekindle a romantic relationship that Steve has no interest in.

Robin used their friendship and her medical condition to convince Liz to agree not only to keep her secret from Patrick, but to also take her place in his life if Robin were to lose her battle with AIDS.

I won't even attempt to list the number of outrageous stunts Carly has pulled in an attempt to manipulate Sonny, Jason, her kids, or anybody else on the show, but like Edward and Elizabeth, it seems to be a part of her nature to do so.

Luke, Alexis, Kristina, Anthony, Tracy, Maxie and others have all had their moments as well.

That's not true for Sam, who has honestly tried to put her dubious past behind her and become a truly better person, or Jason, who doesn't have a manipulative bone in his body. The same could be said of Ethan (when he's not conning a stranger), Dante and Lulu, who even combined aren't smart enough to manipulate a yo-yo, or Mac, who is the straightest arrow on the show. If he wants someone to do something, he just TELLS them to do it, or else. That's not manipulation; that's intimidation.

Sonny's like that too. He's not clever enough or doesn't think far enough ahead to fix the game so that he gets what he wants without getting his hands dirty. Instead, he just uses his money and threats to bully people into complying with his wishes. That's not surprising. Sonny can't even pronounce “man-nipple-ate!”

With that in mind, can we therefore stipulate (or stipple-ate if you're Sonny) that while Elizabeth may be a manipulative person, she is far from alone in that regard?

    I rest my case.

@ransomha It would be better than no personality!

Why could'nt Kelly just blurt it out! I know, I know Fridays cliffhanger.

Diane needs to invest in prettier lingerie. Alexis blew it! She needs to get her grove back.

I will post more later--I had my ballet class over for lunch today, and haven't had a chance to clean up.

A VERY strong vibe that all is not as it seems with Kate. I think (hope) that she is pulling the wool over Scummy, er, Sonny's eyes. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!
Alexis/Diane/Coleman/Mac, wonderful scenes. I just about split a rib laughing when Diane said menopause repeatedly, lol too cute!
Jason and Sam, blah.. but it was nice to see Kelly.
Ethan is in love? He falls in love very easily apparently.
Finally we get a glimpse of Helena! with a knife to boot, will this be the end of Cassandra?
I wish Olivia would keep her opinion to herself regarding Padilla, I think it would be awesome for Lulu to have another friend. I am also wondering if it was Padillo's husband who attacked her from behind.
Counting the days until Robert returns, hopefully he will clean up Port Chuck, it can't come soon enough!

What kind of shrink calls Kate at all times of the day? i thought YOU had to call his office and schedule an appointment. Anyway, why is that such a big deal, most residents of Port Charles have been locked up in Shady Brook, so getting a psychiatrist is actually a rites of passage.

Ethan is in love with ghost girl? GMAB. Is his life that boring?

Scrimmage: You are impressive. I disagree, however, with Sam, I think she too has been very manipulative in the past and can be/would be if relationship with Jason was in jeopardy. But I don't think I could ever argue the point as eloquently as you just did - fantastic writing. Do you ever write into your local papers in the editorial column? If not, you should. You always capture my attention. Great post.

Scrimmage...OMG...Now I can NEVER hear Sonny say "manipulate" without thinking of this....LMAO

Note to writers...please don't include this word in Sonny's dialogue again!

Posted by Unicorn Girl at Friday, February 03 2012 01:46 PM

LOL...Together Dante and Lulu couldn't manipulate a yo-yo......My boss is going to kill me for laughing so loud!
