Cynic – LOL! You make Australian Rules Football sound like a fashion show! I think it should be called “No Rules Football.” It's as if some madman cross bred soccer with the NFL and threw in a little rugby just for flavor. That’s a man’s game – very rough and tumble with non-stop action. Not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure.

bay-I can think of any number of retreads for the umpteenth time, aside from Franco. I am ready for something new and different. TPTB are teasing us with Wyndemere and Lucky in Ireland.

Aussie, no I don't understand it, or any other sport for that matter, but is is beautiful to watch. Before tonight's game they had a feature on aboriginal players going way back. I had not known that there were so many, in fact, I had not known that there were ANY at all. I noticed a few dark skinned players who did not look aborignal or mixed race and wonder if they get players from other countries now?

I was really taken with the smart outfits of the staff. They looked like the Olympic teams in their best outfits. Even the crowd looked neat and tidy.

Whew! I’ve been nervously posting between innings of Game 5 of the World Serious, but finally the Texas Rangers pulled off a come-from-behind, 4-2 victory to take the lead in the Series 3 games to 2. Nerve wracking but thrilling. This may be the best WS in years.

Speaking of Australian Rules Football and other sports, and with both the Cowboys and the Rangers playing within hours and blocks of each other yesterday, I was thinking about George Carlin’s classic comedy routine “The Difference Between Football and Baseball.” If you’ve never heard it, do yourself a favor and check it out. Carlin is a master of the spoken word.

Aussie gal – I haven’t watched ARF in years. I first saw it a long time ago when it was one of the only things on late at night when I was out of town for an extended time in a city that had it on cable for some reason. I didn’t understand what was going on most of the time, but it looked like it would be more fun to play with a few buddies than to watch. It looks pretty rough to me, considering they don’t wear helmets or pads.

Aussie gal – The game is an American invention, and I suppose it’s because when they first played the championship game, it WAS the only baseball in the world, and they’re very big on tradition.

I think one reason that would make international competition difficult is the fact that things like style of play and the number of games in a season vary from country to country and the travel involved crossing time zones would really throw off a game where routine is everything. Also baseball is a sport to be played outside in the summer, and as you know, the seasons are reversed in different hemispheres. That’s why so many American players who need to work on things or rehab during the offseason here will play in the leagues in South America while it’s winter here.

It wouldn’t be competitive like the Olympics anyway; there would be no contest between the guys who play in our league and the rest of the world’s pros, unless all of the players here from Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Japan went home to play for their native teams, but then they wouldn’t make the hundreds of millions of dollars that they earn in the U.S.. As it is, we’ve got the best players in the world, from around the world, so I guess you could say it actually IS internationally representative. The best of the best in the World.

And to think the Texas Rangers are one win away from being the best of the best of the best! I can't believe it!

It shows how boring the party boat massacre has become when we are discussing a kind of football played on the other side of the world.

Thanks aussie-gal for explaining the rules. Nice and simple and easy to remember so that we can concentrate on watching those gorgeous hunks running and wrestling. It is similar to Rugby and Gaelic football. Scrimmage, yes, the game looks rough, but the fact that they don't wear all that kevlar armor means that they are not crashing into each other with enough force to do damage. Like Mexican wrestling, there is a lot of graceful movement and gymnastics involved so they don't get hurt.
