In the ER, Elizabeth has just realized that she has literally come from a fire to a frying pan (by virtue of a hospital being held hostage by a bomber)! Joe tells her that her baby doesn't deserve any more care than his unborn one does. Leo urges Joe to let them help both patients and Epiphany asks Liz to hand Jake over to her. Sam is able to convince Joe to let Jake get treatment and Elizabeth thanks her. That's when Liz notices that she suffered a cut during the fire and is taken for treatment.
In the exam room, Angela tells Kelly that she wanted Joe to have a son while Kelly detects a respiratory problem. Behind the next curtain Liz wants to go see Jake, but Leo tells her that she has lost a lot of blood. Epiphany tells her that Jason is here so she can calm down.
Monica tells Dr. Ford that they need to help the pregnant woman, no matter what her insurance status is. He insists that they can't start helping everybody, and the staff starts to bicker. Sam tells Joe to turn and walk away and start working on being a good father. Monica tells Joe that if he leaves, she will treat his wife. He doesn't trust them and insists on seeing it through. His wife crumples to the floor. Epiphany informs Dr. Ford to stay the hell out of her way because she is sick and tired of death and sickness.
Jax goes to the hospital to talk to Dr. Lee about his and Carly's chances of having a child. Kelly tells him that she can't talk about her patient; however, a hypothetical patient would require drugs to aid in ovulation. If that didn't work, the couple could try invitro fertilization, which can be very stressful, she explains. Finally, she suggests that Jax talk to Carly. "You might be surprised at what you learn," she says and he thanks her. On his way to the elevator, Jax sees a couple with their children and watches them wistfully.
Carly is waiting for an appointment with Dr. Lee, but she's far more interested in watching what looks like sparks flying between Jason and Elizabeth at the nurses' desk. Jason whispers an apology for missing New Year's Eve and Liz tells him that she still has the champagne. They agree to meet at the safe house, and then Jason takes off. Then, Dr. Lee fetches Carly to discuss her fertility options. Carly toys with a little giraffe that she picked up in hopes that she'll be decorating a nursery soon and says that she's going to try to will herself pregnant!
Coop has gone to the hospital to check up on Maxie, who is doing her community service work. She's glad to see him, and as she kisses him, we see his footprints with a dice pattern. Over at the nurses' desk, Sam finds a little giraffe and finds out from Kelly that it's Carly's. She offers to take it over to her.
Jax is lying on the sofa when the phone rings. It's Dr. Kelly, and she wants Carly to fax over a copy of her insurance card because she didn't have it last week. Jax asks why Carly was in to see her? Kelly covers quickly and says it was an annual check up.
Carly and Robin argue about children at the hospital. Dr. Lee comes out when things get heated and asks what is going on. Robin leaves. Dr. Lee asks Carly if she is ready for her appointment and they go inside. Dr. Lee tells Carly that she isn't pregnant, breaking her heart. She tells Dr. Lee that she knew getting pregnant would be hard but that she didn't realize it would be this hard. A while later Robin returns and Dr. Lee gives her a folder filled with information on sperm banks. Robin hurries back out on the main floor and runs into Elizabeth at the nurse's station. She doesn't really notice Liz is there and that Patrick is there, too. Elizabeth asks Patrick what is going on.
Robin finds Kelly and says that she's ready to consider a sperm bank. Kelly says they can start right away and then leaves for an appointment. Carly finds Robin and mocks her attempts to find a daddy. Robin quips, "Unlike you - who manages to get knocked up by the man of the minute." Carly looks confused.
Patrick and Leo grab a beer and sit at their table. Patrick refuses to feel like a criminal for being honest enough to admit that he doesn't want to be a father. At another table, the ladies are deliberately talking loud enough for the guys to hear. They say that men are babies themselves, that men want their women's undivided attention, and so on. Finally Patrick scoots his chair over and tells them if they're so eager to talk about babies, here he is. He tells the women that none of them have kids, and in fact, Kelly told him that she doesn't want kids. Kelly clarifies that if she was in love with a guy and it was a deal breaker, she'd "give it a hard look". Robin says that she wishes Patrick could see himself the way that she does - that he would make a great father. Leo tells them to stop busting Patrick's chops and Kelly tells him to keep his nose out of it. Eventually, Robin and Patrick are left alone at the table and Patrick tells her that he's just trying to avoid a disaster. She says that she appreciates the compromise he came up with, but she would love him more than ever after a year and still be childless. They agree that they miss each other, but Robin tells him that there's always Leyla. Patrick says that he could like Leyla, if only he could stop loving her.
