Marriage of Inconvenience
Chapter 2: Three days ago
Lulu is pacing back and forth in the bathroom and nervously wringing her hands together. She checks her watch three times in five seconds. She jumps when she hears Maxie banging on the door.
Maxie: LULU! Are you done yet?
Lulu: If I were done, I'd be out.
Maxie: Well you've been in there for ten minutes. Did you fall in or something?
Lulu: Don't be gross. I'll be out in a minute. Forty-six more seconds to be exact.
Lulu: Nothing. Look, Maxie, when I'm done, I'll let you know. Of course if you got your OWN PLACE you could use the bathroom anytime you wanted.
Maxie: I'M NOT MOVING OUT. Just let me know when you're done. I'm late as it is.
Lulu: (murmuring to herself) You're not the only one.
Lulu snatches up the pregnancy test box off of the sink and reads the directions for the fourth time. She had been in the bathroom so long because it took her eight minutes to work up the nerve to take the pregnancy test. She looks at her watch again and realizes it's time to read the results. She takes a deep breath and picks up the pregnancy test. She looks at it and then looks at the color guide on the directions. She looks back and forth between the two things in confusion.
Lulu: What am I, a magnet for defective merchandise? Damn it.
Lulu throws the stick back in the box, then throws the box in the drug store bag it came in. She washes her hands and storms out of the bathroom where she bumps into Maxie. Maxie stumbles and regains her footing while Lulu drops her bag. She snatches it up off of the floor before the box can spill out.
Lulu: I'm done.
Maxie is about to say something snappy but stops herself when she sees the flustered look on Lulu's face.
Maxie: I can see that. What's wrong with you?
Maxie: Then why do you look...like that?
Lulu: I don't look like anything. I've gotta go.
Maxie: Look Lulu, I know you still hate me for what happened with Johnny. But I really am sorry about what happened.
Lulu: Sorry doesn't quite cover what you and Johnny did.
Maxie: I know. But I swear I'm gonna do everything I can to make it up to you and Spinelli. I just want us to all be friends again..
Lulu: Well, good luck with that. I've gotta go.
Lulu quickly leaves the apartment and throws the bag in a random trash can on the way to her car. Unsure of where to go, she starts her car and drives around randomly. She ends up at the park and after strolling through for a few minutes, she sits down on a bench to think. She's so deep in thought that she doesn't see Ethan walk up next to her. Lulu jumps at the sound of his voice when Ethan calls her name as he sits down next to her on the bench.
Ethan: Didn't mean to scare you. I just saw you from across the way and thought I'd come over and say hi.
Lulu doesn't say anything else in hopes that Ethan takes the hint and leaves. He gets the hint but completely ignores it.
Ethan: You know, they say if someone catches you in a stare it means you're thinking too hard.
Lulu: Hmm. Well THEY are right.
Ethan: They usually are. What are you thinking so hard about?
Lulu: The usuals. Life, the past, the future, blah blah blah.
Ethan: Sounds big. If you want to get more specific, I'm a great listener.
Lulu: Thanks but no thanks.
Ethan: Are you sure? You look like you really need to unburden your soul. I'll bet you all the money in my wallet that you'll feel better afterwards.
Lulu: I don't think so.
Ethan: How about I guess.
Ethan: You look like you need it. Give me...five guesses. If I guess wrong I'll leave you alone. But if I guess right, you have to spill.
Lulu: A little eager for some girl talk?
Ethan: With the right girl, why not?
Lulu rolls her eyes and shakes her head.
Lulu: Two guesses. Then you go away.
Ethan: Make that four guesses and I'll never ask you about it again.
Ethan: Four and I won't tell your dad or Tracy that I saw you out here moping about.
Lulu: My dad won't care.
Ethan: Maybe not. But I have the feeling Tracy will. Wouldn't you rather have me here bugging you than her?
Lulu: Fine. Four guesses, but make it quick.
Ethan: Ok. First guess. You saw the infamous ex,-boyfriend Johnny Z, with another girl.
Ethan: Ok. You are upset about something your father, stepmother and/or brother did.
Lulu: Wrong again.
Ethan: Hmmm. You're mad at your roommate or boss for something that happened at home or at work?
Lulu: Wow. Even with vague statements like that you still got it wrong. You're really bad at this.
Lulu laughs a little at Ethan which causes him to smile since that was his real motivation for the little game in the first place.
Ethan: Fine. I give up.
Lulu: You're not gonna use your last guess? I didn't realize you were a quitter.
Ethan: I didn't realize you were so complicated. You want me to throw something out there just to use the guess?
Lulu: You're the one who insisted on getting four. I'd be a little disappointed if you didn't follow through.
Ethan: Well I'd hate to disappoint you. So my last guess is...You are...pregnant.
Ethan starts to laugh at his own joke but doesn't when he realizes Lulu is no longer smiling.
Lulu: I knew I should've let it go.
Ethan: I'm right? You're PREGNANT?
Lulu: Shhhh. Stop shouting. People will hear you.
Ethan: (whispering) You're PREGNANT?
Lulu: I don't know. I might be.
Ethan: I assume that Johnny Z is...responsible. Does he know?
Lulu: No. No one knows. And I don't want Johnny to ever find out.
Ethan: Have you taken one of those tests.
Lulu: Yea but it was hard to read. I think it was defective or something.
Ethan: What do you mean?
Lulu: It was supposed to turn pink or blue, but it didn't turn either of those colors. It was like purple or fuchsia or something.
Ethan: That can't be right.
Lulu: I'd show it to you but I threw it away. I didn't want to carry around a pee stick all day. I'm funny that way.
Ethan: Are you gonna get another test?
Lulu: No. With my luck, that one would be defective too. I think I'm just gonna go to the hospital and see the doctor. She'll be able to tell me for sure one way or the other.
Ethan: Do you want me to go with you?
Lulu: What? No. I can handle it. I'll be fine.
Ethan: You can't go on your own. And since I'm the only one who knows, I'm your only option.
Lulu: No you're not. My other option is to go alone.
Ethan: That option doesn't work for me. I'm bound by my honor to ignore your independent woman speech and insist on escorting you. I won't take no for an answer. I'll follow you there if I have to.
Lulu: Are you always this pushy?
Ethan: Only when it's important. Shall we?
Knowing it's a losing battle, Lulu deeply sighs and takes Ethan's arm and they walk together to her car. On the ride to the hospital Ethan tries to engage Lulu in idle chitchat but she is distracted. He decides to give up on the easy talk and ask her the question that had been on his mind.
Ethan: Why don't you want Johnny to know?
Lulu: Because I'm not in the mood for a deja vu.
Lulu: Meaning I've been through something like this before and I'm in no hurry to go through it again.
At Ethan's confused expression, Lulu decides to elaborate.
Lulu: The short version is that I've been pregnant by a guy who really didn't love me before. It was a huge mess before and I think it would be worse with Johnny. He's got family issues. This pregnancy would be his worst nightmare. He'd probably want me to get an abortion.
Ethan: But you don't want to?
Lulu: I don't know if I could go through that again. But regardless, I want to make the right decision for the right reasons.
Ethan: So if you're not pregnant, he never has to find out about this scare. But if you are, will you tell him?
Lulu: I don't know. I don't really know anything right now, including why I'm telling you all this.
Ethan: You just help yourself. Few people can when it comes to me.
Lulu: I'll bet.
Ethan and Lulu arrive at the hospital and take the elevator to the right floor. They approach the nurse's station and Lulu silently rejoices when she doesn't recognize any of the nurses. Dr. Kelly Lee squeezes Lulu in between other appointments and administers the pregnancy test. Lulu is anxious to leave the hospital before she sees anyone she knows and in her hurried exit, she leaves her purse in Kelly's office. She hurries to the waiting room and is strangely comforted at seeing Ethan waiting patiently for her. They walk to the elevators but before they push any buttons, the doors slide open and Johnny walks out.
Ethan: Oh, nothing. Just easing the tension. Are you ready to go?
Johnny: Wait. What are you doing here? Are you sick or something?
Lulu: Why do you care?
Johnny: Just because we're not together doesn't mean I stopped caring about you.
Lulu: No. But I'm pretty sure you kissing other girls means you stopped caring about me.
Johnny: I deserved that. You don't have to give me details. Just tell me you're ok.
Lulu: I'm ok. Goodbye.
Ethan: Don't worry mate. She is in good hands. I promise to take VERY good care of her.
Johnny glares at Ethan, who is smiling innocently. Neither man moves. Before Lulu can break off the staring contest and push Ethan onto the elevators, Kelly comes running towards them. Because of Claudia's pregnancy, Johnny knows exactly what kind of doctor Kelly is. He eyes Lulu suspiciously when Kelly reaches them.
Kelly: Lulu! I'm glad I caught you. You forgot your purse in my office.
Lulu: Oh. Thanks. I didn't even realize I left it.
Kelly: That's just the nerves. But don't stress yourself out. We'll get your test results in soon, so try to relax and keep your mind off of it until then, ok?
Lulu: Sure. Thanks.
Kelly leaves and Lulu avoids eye contact with Johnny. She nervously pushes the elevator button three times, mentally willing the doors to hurry up and open. Her behavior confirms what Johnny's been thinking.
Johnny: Oh my god. Are you…? Are you pregnant?
Lulu: Keep your voice down.
Johnny: Answer me. Are you pregnant?
Lulu: That's none of your business because I’M none of your business.
Johnny: You're my business if you're pregnant with my child.
Ethan: Well then this is definitely none of your business because if she IS pregnant, the baby's not yours. It's mine.
