He grew up in Brooklyn Heights, New York until his father died when he was nine. His mother and older brother moved to Mystic, Connecticut. He went on to graduate from Dartmouth College (his roommate was actor Michael Moriarty!) He earned two graduate degrees, including a Ph.D., and taught at Queens College. While there, he started appearing in New York theater productions as part of his tenure path. A talent scout from Universal Studios spotted Macht while appearing at the Canadian Shakespeare Festival and he was given an acting contract by the mid 1970's. He moved his wife and young son, (today's actor Gabriel Macht) to California in 1977. He has an impressive resume of TV roles.
