Fashion House Star Tony Tripoli Takes The Time To Speak With Soaps.com

    Thursday, September 07 2006

    Tony Tripoli

Thursday September 7, 2006, I anxiously await a phone call from actor Tony Tripoli (Hans) on the new primetime sensation Fashion House. The phone rings and his publicist Steve (who we must thank for making the interview possible…Thanks Steve!) connects me through to Tony.

    Shannon:

    “Hey Tony, how’s it going”?

    Tony:

“I’m chomping at the bits to get my hands on you”.

    Shannon

“They’re keeping you busy out there with Fashion House aren’t they”?

    Tony:

    “OK….your website is amazing”!

    Shannon:

    “You like it”?

    Tony:

“I went on last night, and I cannot believe your recaps.”

    Shannon:

“Well, I tell ya…that’s what happens when you’re addicted to the show. Two episodes, and I am already hooked”.

    Tony:

“It is unbelievable, I couldn’t even believe that you literally put into parenthesis While Hans is making a face trying to direct her with his eyes. Like I… almost S*** myself I was laughing so hard, because I really feel like every episode of the show should just be called Tony makes a face”.

    Shannon:

“You were trying to help her out with the eye contact….so, I had to put it in there”.

    Tony:

    “That’s so great. Thank you”!

    Shannon:

“I want to thank you so much for taking time to speak with us today. I know you are very busy out there. I just want to ask you a few questions and I will let you go”.

    Tony:

“No, I am so thrilled about this”.

    Shannon:

“Well, as you already know, I am hooked on the show. I’ve told you that. What have you been hearing other people say about the show already”?

    Tony:

“Well, first of all, everybody is furious that we’re not in the opening credits. But…of course, that’s really just my family and friends”.

    Shannon:

    “I don’t blame them”.

    Tony:

“And, all the voices in my head. But, I am assured from the executives at the network that it was just an oversight that will be corrected soon. So, America does not have to worry, Hans and Harold will be in the opening credits”. (Laughter…)

    Shannon:

“We will relay that to all of your fans out there”.

    Tony:

“You know, I’ll believe it when I see it. But really, it is the hottest looking show. It looks so great”!

    Shannon:

“It really does. I don’t know how to describe it either…it is very fast paced”.

    Tony:

“Keep in mind, we never got to see an episode until it aired”.

    Shannon:

    “Oh really”?

    Tony:

“I was sitting there with the rest of the country going , what the hell is this going to be”.

    Shannon:

“Did you have a big party for the premier”?

    Tony:

“There was an event in Santa Monica at the Fox station. But, it was all executives….you know. So, I was there earlier in the evening, and then a little after 8pm when Desire started airing…I snuck out, and went and watched with some friends”.

    Shannon:

    “Everybody likes it right”?

    Tony:

“Yeah, everybody really likes it. This is how I am explaining it to people. It’s sort of like, remember when you watched Miami Vice when it was on television? You might be too young to remember”.

    Shannon:

“No, I remember it from when I was a child”.

    Tony:

“It was very different than anything else that was on TV at the time. It looked different…it had a different pace and a different vibe. I really feel that’s what’s going on with Fashion House. It’s a different hour long experience than anything we’re used to”.

    Shannon:

“That is one of the questions that I was leading to. The format is so different than any of the other primetime dramas that we are used to seeing like Dynasty …and Dallas…and Falcon Crest…and all of those. The Telenovela format has been huge In other countries, how do you think America is going to react to it”?

    Tony:

“Well, you know…we are not a patient people”.

    Shannon:

    “This is true”.

    Tony:

“I think that a lot of people are going to be thrilled that they don’t have to wait a week to see how some situation is going to resolve itself. So, you know the upside is, you get to check in with these people every night and see what new trouble they’ve gotten themselves into”.

    Shannon:

“And….you get the recaps on Saturdays if you miss a day”!

    Tony:

“Exactly….which is a pretty genius move. I don’t know if they do the recaps in the Spanish language novela countries. I don’t know if it is something that some brilliant person at Fox thought of, or whether that was a standard part of the format. I don’t know….”

    Shannon:

“I don’t either, but it was a very good idea”.

    Tony:

    “Yeah…it’s great”.

    Shannon:

“From what I understand, you guys have been touring the country this summer promoting the show”?

    Tony:

“You know, we were shooting until about 10 days before the premier. So, we only wrapped on Wednesday….the 23rd…I think…of August. Then, we were on the air the 5th”.

    Shannon:

    “Wow”.

    Tony:

“So, the Desire cast I think, had to shoulder most of the promotional burden. Depending on what the first week’s numbers are, that will determine if, you know, more of us will need to do more trips. I am hoping that enough people are watching the show that they feel like it is worth the investment”.

    Shannon:

“Well, if not this week, then hopefully when everyone reads it on Soaps.com they’re gonna really start to watch it. That’s what we’re trying to do for you guys”.

    Tony:

    “I hope so”.

    Shannon:

“Well, Desire is kind of your sister show. Have you had much interaction with the casts over there”?

    Tony:

“Well you know, all of the shows are shot in San Diego ..(even though we’re pretending to be in Los Angeles). There is a facility there that has 9 sound stages on it. Veronica Mars is shot there and then 2 of the MY NETWORK shows are there. Desire started shooting about 8 weeks before us. So, we only overlapped for about 5 or 6 weeks, where we were both shooting at the same time. Sometimes, they would be on the stage next door…or sometimes their trailers would be near ours…so, we would sort of see them. But, our schedules were always very different because, again…there were 3 different sets operating everyday, for each of the 2 shows. So, you had all these cast members spread out over 6 different sets. Some of which were not at the sound stage. Sometimes you would be shooting on location. Some days you would do the first half of the day on location, and then they would send you over to the sound stage to do a couple of scenes there…and then maybe go back to location. So, you know, it was a very complicated schedule and because of that, there was not really a lot of down time…or free time to see the other cast. Everybody was just so busy working, so unfortunately I only got to meet them in doing promotional stuff. But, I have to tell you that Nate is one of the sweetest, nicest guys I have ever met. He is absolutely one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life”.

    Shannon:

“I will be sure and put that in there”.

    Tony:

“Honestly, I haven’t had a chance to see the show, but he seems like a really talented guy. His wife…they’re expecting their first baby…they’re 6 months pregnant”.

    Shannon:

    “That’s awesome”.

    Tony:

“Yeah, talk about having a great year“.

    Shannon:

“Yeah…no kidding. Is there a particular cast mate on Fashion House that you have enjoyed working with the most”?

    Tony:

“You know…it is really weird. I hate it when I read an interview with someone and they talk about how everybody was so nice, because that is so boring. The reason that you read celebrity profiles is because you want to hear who they hate. I wish I could give you a great scoop like that. Bo Derek is one of the loveliest, sweetest and surprisingly funniest people that I have ever dealt with”.

    Shannon:

    “Unlike Maria….right”?

    Tony:

“Yeah…I love that woman. Morgan Fairchild is every bit as much Morgan Fairchild as you would expect her to be. She does not disappoint. You know, the rest of the cast is amazing. I think that Rob Buckley, who plays Michael the photographer….I think he is going to break out and become a huge star after this. I’ll give you that….that is an exclusive I will give you right now”.

    Shannon:

    “That’s Tony’s predictions right there”.

    Tony:

“I think because he’s fantastically good looking, he’s super talented, he’s a really really nice, really caring person. He works so hard…and he’s funny. He’s just a great guy”.

    Shannon:

“After what I have seen of the show so far, there is a lot of newness in it, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out a lot of opportunities for all of you guys”.

    Tony:

“I told him about half way through shooting, that I predict by January 1 of 2007, he will have a sitcom and 2 movie deals in place. That was my prediction”.

    Shannon:

“I recently read your interview in an issue of Out Magazine, and I agree with you that it’s a really big deal that a gay actor gets to portray a gay character on a show. Has that been a positive response from the gay and lesbian community, such as them planning on tuning in to support the show”?

    Tony:

“You know….I….Let me be as diplomatic as I can. In launching a new network, Part of the business model was that they did this for an incredibly small amount of money. So, by virtue of that, there are not a lot of advertising dollars. And, the advertising dollars that Fox had, really went towards buses and billboards, and they really didn’t do any magazine ads. Personally, I wish they would’ve reached out a little more to the gay community…I wish they would have taken ads in some of the gay and lesbian publications…I wish that they would have been a little more aggressive in placing…you know, placing and getting interviews and things for me to be able to promote the show in more of the gay and lesbian publications. But you know, launching a new network is a massive undertaking, and they have done a terrific job”.

    Shannon:

    “Yes they have”.

    Tony:

“I really don’t know how much the gay and lesbian community is aware of the show. I hope that people are hearing that there are 2 actual homosexuals playing gay guys on this show, and that it's something that motivates people to check it out and support it. If the networks don’t get a sense that people are energized that they have real gay guys that play these roles, then it works against us….it goes the other way, and it’s 2 big steps backwards”.

    Shannon:

“Well hopefully, the article in Out Magazine will help and also Soaps.com is here to help. Also, I have seen your personal website…If you want to go ahead and plug that right fast”.

    Tony:

“Yes please! I hope that everyone will go check out
www.TonyTripoli.com. There are all kinds of video clips and pictures and fun stuff on there”.

    Shannon:

“You have that and also I saw a link to your page on My Space…which everyone is on. You have a lot of fans on there that are watching the show it seems”.

    Tony:

“Oh, I hope so…I would love to hear from all of them”.

    Shannon:

“One question for you, can you tell us…is Hans going to have a love interest on the show”?

    Tony:

“You know, we don’t get to go there. I mentioned having a date in an episode, but unfortunately, there are just so many characters on a show like that, that you know, you don’t really see my character outside of his work life. His work life is pretty intense. I would have loved for them to do that, but you know, if enough people love the show, then maybe they will bring us back for another season….”

    Shannon:

“Well, there’s always the other Telenovelas lined up to come on afterwards….right”?

    Tony:

“That’s right. I think it would be amazing to have a sexy…like our show, everyone is running around half naked all of the time. It would be pretty interesting to see what the dynamic would be if there were a gay character with an active sex life”.

    Shannon:

“Absolutely. Tony, can you tell your fans that will be reading this, something about you that they would never guess”?

    Tony:

“Gosh…I don’t know. My goal is to be the gay Oprah”.

    Shannon:

    “The gay Oprah”?

    Tony:

“Yeah…and I want to make everyone’s decisions for them. And, I want to determine how people decorate their homes and dress…and what bras they buy. You know how Oprah did that whole episode about how people were buying the wrong bras all of their lives? The country was in an uproar, and everyone had to go bra shopping like the next day? I wanna be that for the gays and lesbians. Let’s face it, the Lesbians could use my help”.

    Shannon:

    “There ya go”. (Laughter)….

    Tony:

“I’m stepping up to the plate” (Laughter)….

    Tony Tripoli

    Shannon:

“Are you involved with any social causes or work for the greater good that you would like to tell your fans about and how they can help you support that cause”?

    Tony:

“No, I’m completely selfish and I care about no one but myself”.

    Shannon:

(Laughter and more laughter)…. “And they can do that at
    www.TonyTripoli.com right”?

    Tony:

(Laughter… ) “No, I love that here in Los Angeles, we have a place called The Village, and it is a part of the gay and lesbian center, and they have a theater there, and I do a lot of shows there…fundraisers. I have this incredibly funny group of friends and we do all kinds…probably 4 or 5 of those a year there to try and raise money. They do incredible work. They have a van that drives around Los Angeles and picks up young prostitutes and help get them more traditional jobs. They just do amazing stuff. I think The Trevor Project does incredible work…What’s so exciting to me about being a gay guy on television, is that when I was 15, there was nobody on television who I thought was like me. And so, I think that by just existing that that’s really profound and can really impact young people and what they think of themselves.”.

    Shannon:

    “Absolutely it’s going to”.

    Tony:

“For me, it’s just about showing up everyday. Being there…being a part of this show…it’s really huge. I’m so thrilled! I think Fox needs to really be given the credit because in the original Spanish language version of this show, there were no Hans and Harold. This was something that they added for the American version”.

    Shannon:

    “Wow”

    Tony:

“Yeah, so it’s not like this was just part of the deal when they decided to do the show. They actively chose to add these characters…and I think that’s really bold of them.

    Shannon:

“It is really bold. I think back to the days of ( I believe it was Dynasty) when they had one of the characters that was going to be gay and then they kinda changed their minds…”

    Tony:

“Yeah…I remember it changed actors and all that stuff. You know, I really never watched that show. My family is in Texas, so we watched Dallas”…..(Laughter)….

    Shannon:

    (Laughter)…

    Tony:

“But yeah, whenever there was a gay character he was either miserable or suicidal. We had Monroe on Too Close for Comfort, but he never said it….he was just sort of goofy”.

    Shannon:

“I think it’s awesome what Fox has done, taking that bold step to move us forward”.

“What other projects are you going to be involved with after Fashion House? Besides being the gay Oprah of course….”

    Tony:

“Well….I plan to have an empire. Laughter…And so, in order to get that, what that means is for the next 13 weeks while this show is on every night, I will be at the opening of every donut shop and dry cleaner that will have me. Anyone that’s having a Fashion House party, just give me a ring, and I’ll be happy to stop by, do balloon animals…you know, that is really the level of things at this point. I really want to start going on all of the talk shows and being a really crafty fashion expert…and of course, I am totally not qualified to do that. But…Steven doesn’t deserve to have all of the fun. I would like to take a swing at Gwyneth Paltrow, what she wears to the Golden Globes…once…..right”?

    Shannon:

“There you go…I agree with you. You deserve that chance”.

    Tony:

    “I think so…laughter…I think I’ve earned it”.

    Shannon:

“Laughter….yes, yes you have. Is there anything else that you would like to say to your fans out there that are going to be reading this”?

    Tony:

    “Gosh….I don’t know. I am a single gay guy….living in Los Angeles, California….with a TV show”.

    Shannon:

“Well, I don’t think you will be single for long”.

    Tony:

“Well, get to work on that Shannon”!

    Shannon:

“I will see what I can do”.

    Tony:

    (Laughter)….

    Shannon:

“We have numerous visitors to our site every day, so I will personally work on it”.

    Tony:

“Really? I am so excited! I will also admit, that I will be reading every message board, and anytime anyone says anything mean about me…..I will cry myself to sleep”.

    Shannon:

“You know, I actually have several girls that I could set you up with right now. Some of my female team members at Soaps.com (who shall remain nameless)…..I wasn’t going to ask this question, but since you are such a cool guy, some of them are curious as to how often you work out because they love your arms”.

    Tony:

“Wow…Isn’t that nice? It is so funny, the gay guys are so not impressed, and then Women are like Wow, you really work out! Gay guys are like….um, he’s not that hot! So, you know, I have a trainer, and I am on the Hollywood Actress Diet….which basically means, if it involves chewing, you are not allowed to have it. So, I have really been trying to get it together, so that I can really rule the world by Christmas….that’s my plan.” (Laughter)…..

    Shannon:

“Well, the girls at Soaps.com think that you are off to a great start”.

    Tony:

“Seriously, all joking aside, that is really, really sweet and I am really touched by that. Please thank them for me”.

    Shannon:

“I definitely will. The last thing I have for you Tony, if you don’t mind. You said that you’ve taken a look at our site, can we get a quote from you regarding the site…that you would like to tell all of the fans out there”?

    Tony:

“Well, I really think that the first thing I have to say about the site is that the recaps are longer than the scripts themselves, and way more detailed. I wish we could have had you on the set when we were shooting, because you don’t miss a bit”.

“It is a really great site, and the time is gonna come when somebody misses an episode, and the good news is there’s one place they can go and get totally caught up, and know more about the shows than the actors on the shows actually……even now”.

    Shannon:

“Well, that is exactly what we are here for”!

    Tony:

    “Yeah, it’s really incredible…it’s exhaustive…it’s so comprehensive”.

    Shannon:

“That’s awesome that you feel that way and we’re glad that we’re making you proud out there”.

    Tony:

    “Oh, it’s ruling”.

    Shannon:

“Well, I personally love the show! I’m going to do all that I can to put this interview on there within the next day so all of the fans can see it, and generate some more energy around the show. On behalf of Soaps.com and myself, it has been a pleasure talking with you. We wish you all the best and continued success….now go and get your empire”!

After that, Tony and I continued to talk for another minute or so. He inquired about where I was located, and come to find out, he has distant family members in the same town here in South Carolina. Of course I told him that when he makes it to this area again, to give me a call and we could hang out and re-hash the show or something. He extended his gratitude once again to Soaps.com and instructed us not to hesitate to contact him in the future if he can be of any service to the website. He then made sure that I had plenty of pictures of him for the site.

Tony Tripoli is truly a kind person with a great sense of humor. It was my pleasure to have the chance to speak with him regarding his new show Fashion House and his future aspirations. Thanks Tony!
