Chad and Abby make a decision, Will shares something important with Marlena, and the Salem residents ring in the new year.
EJ and Nicole cuddle in bed at the mansion. They laugh about schmoozing with the common folk and make love. Later, she tells him he needs to get his face out there as part of his mayoral responsibility.
Brady pops in on Madison at Titan. She’s overwhelmed with work and Brady suggests she take a break so they can go celebrate. She declines and then is upset it was so easy for him to leave her. A moment later he surprises her by bringing in dinner. She’s thrilled. After eating, Brady leaves and Madison takes a phone call. She wishes the caller a Happy New Year but hangs up quickly when Brady returns. She covers for her call, Brady jokes about marrying her and they leave.
In their hotel room Carrie and Austin ready themselves for New Year's Eve. She asks Austin how she looks but he thinks she wasted her time putting the dress on since he’s going to take it right off. They fall to the bed and make love.
At Jenn’s, Abby and Chad make plans for a perfect New Year’s Eve at home. She wonders if Chad really wanted to go to the party at the square but he claims he’s where he wants to be. Later he brings up the relationship book and they simultaneously announce, "We need to talk." They agree their relationship doesn’t feel right and decide to break up but remain friends. Chad leaves.
In the loft, Will chats with Rafe and Sami about being single on New Year’s Eve. He sarcastically remarks it’s a real blast. Rafe tries to console him with expensive food from a restaurant he says they can’t afford which prompts Sami to announce she has a new job. Rafe is miffed she didn’t talk to him about it first. She shares the details and Rafe mentions his job offer from Carrie. Sami comments about how she doesn’t get along with Carrie and Will blasts her for being selfish. Sami wants to know why he’s so mad. Mel and Sonny show up. Sami invites them to stay and takes Mel aside to ask her about Will being upset. Mel mentions the break-up and says he’s now a temperamental sweet guy. Sami hopes that he just needs time and later assures Will she’ll be a better mom. After Mel, Sonny and Will leave, Sami apologizes to Rafe. He says he’s proud of her and soon Carrie and Austin arrive. Rafe shares that he told Sami about his job while Sami feigns a smile and guzzles her drink. Soon the foursome is laughing over games. Carrie and Austin go and Rafe declares the new year will be the best yet. He and Sami have sex.
EJ and Nicole wander the square. They sit and make a toast to a fresh start. Nearby, Sonny, Mel and Will run out from a party. Sonny dances his way back and Mel asks Will if he’s okay. She goes to grab a drink and Sonny pops back out with his friend Tyler. They laugh with Will about Sonny’s dance moves. Before catching up with Nicole, EJ eavesdrops on them then the boys head back to the party, Will takes off and Mel has her drink.
At the townhouse, Marlena and John kiss on the couch. When she tries to order take-out for dinner Marlena discovers her card has been declined. John gets the bad news from the bank. After paying back the pensioners, they don’t have a penny to their name. Marlena realizes they are the lucky ones since they have each other. Over dinner John thanks her for her understanding and they make out. An emotional Will shows up to talk to Marlena, claiming his life is out of control. He’s ready to talk but before he does he wants Marlena to swear not to say anything then he cries out that Sami cheated on Rafe with EJ. He admits he saw her and Marlena believes him. A teary eyed Will hugs her.
At the pub, Hope, Bo, Julie and Doug share a champagne toast to the New Year. They reminisce and are happy Doug is going to sing later. Bo and Hope step outside for fresh air and they remember Zack. Hope wants some peace and understanding. Even though it will hurt to bring up old memories they decide to talk to someone about it so they can stay strong. Back inside, Brady and Madison show up as Julie and Doug announce they are singing a song for all the lovers out there. Bo and Hope and Brady and Madison all take to the dance floor. Soon it’s midnight and there are cheers and kisses all around.
In the square at midnight, Abby stands alone watching Austin and Carrie at the party, Chad surprises Melanie with a New Year’s kiss and EJ kisses Nicole in front of the tree.
