Shannon: Hi Eileen? This is Shannon with Soaps.com. How are you doing today?
Eileen: Hey there, I'm good. I was just looking at you guys site. It's great!
Shannon: I'm glad that you like it! Let me start by welcoming you to Days of Our Lives...I am sure that you are excited about that!
Eileen: Oh, it is so much fun!
Shannon: What can you tell us about your character Beverly Healy?
Eileen: Beverly is a woman who casually meets Shawn, Belle and Claire at Java Café. She comments on how sweet she is and how she has a son of her own over in Germany. By the end of the episode you realize that she is not exactly what she appears to be.
Shannon: Ahh, in true drama fashion!
Eileen: Laughter… Love it! You know what it is? I said to the guys (because I recurred on a soap and had small parts years ago) you know, this show is written in such classic soap opera style. It is really written in such a great way.
Shannon: You said that you have appeared on other soaps, tell us about that.
Eileen: I did small day player parts on One Life to Live years ago. Then I was recurring on Loving for about a year and a half.
Shannon: Who did you play on Loving?
Eileen: I played a cop on there and sometimes I would be a day player. Do you remember on Loving when they started killing everybody off?
Shannon: Yes, when it was transitioning into The City?
Eileen: Yes. Well, I stayed with it when it went to The City and as they were starting to kill everybody off I would come in and say I think we've got him! Then of course it was No, we don't have him! Then it would be I think we've really got him this time! and then No, we don't again. It was one of those kinds of things, but it kept me gainfully employed for over a year while I was doing theatre in New York. The role on DOOL is a little meatier than me running into the room making announcements.
Shannon: How did this role of DOOL come about?
Eileen: It was like Manna from Heaven. I got a phone call from my agent while I was driving and she told me that Fran (casting director from DOOL) called her and wanted to know if I would be interested in this part. I thought it was an audition, so I told her to send me the material and I will look at it. When I got home and checked my email, there was an offer saying that it will pay this much etc, etc. I was like "ohhhh". Laughter..
Shannon: That was nice huh?
Eileen: It was really nice! It doesn't usually happen that way. What it was is that Fran had seen me do a play a couple of years ago here in Los Angeles and she remembered my work. She basically said that when she had the right thing for me she would give me a call. The producers have since come down to me and told me that they really had no expectations of what the character was going to be. They then informed me that I had just made her so, so, so evil! Laughter
Shannon: Laughter. Oh goodness!
Eileen: Laughter. I think she was originally just to be to the point and business like, but sort of by accident that kind of changed. The first time that I held the baby "Claire", she loved me. When I went to go pick her up she kind of reached for me and I in that moment (in the scene) just said Oh come here sweetheart. Everyone on the set was like, "Ewww!" Laughter.
Eileen: So, it was by accident that it happened that way, but they decided to keep it and you will see that on (I believe) January 3 or 4. When I take the baby it kind of gives you the creeps.
Shannon: Well you know, DAYS has a history of having some pretty wicked women on there! Laughter
Shannon: I can think of a handful over the years that I have been a fan. I will be looking forward to seeing this!
Eileen: It's a lot of fun.
Shannon: How long is your character supposed to be around?
Eileen: We don't know yet. It was originally going to be just 2 episodes, but I have done 7 so far. They take a break starting December 19 and come back January 7. I would imagine that after they return we will have a better idea of what is going to happen.
Shannon: And did I hear it correctly that you premiere on December 20?
Eileen: That is right.
Shannon: That's this week. The big day is almost here.
Eileen: I know, it is so exciting. You know, the cast and crew members of this show are so lovely. It is like a real family there.
Eileen: You know. I'm an ABC gal. I'm an All My Children girl! Laughter…
Shannon: Uh oh! Laughter…
Eileen: I remember when I was on Loving, AMC was across the hall from us. There was one time that I stepped out to get a soda out of the machine and Ruth Warwick (Phoebe Tyler) was there. It absolutely just took my breath away because I had never seen her in person!
Shannon: You about had to be picked up off of the floor?
Eileen: Oh my gosh it was so great! She was such a Grande Dame. So, yeah I was an AMC girl. Well, The Young and the Restless as well. That was funny too because I have seen Y&R and Guiding Light you know all of these shows growing up. I was sitting in my make-up chair the other day and this actress walks up and she used to play Beth on GL.
Shannon: Judi Evans?
Eileen: Yes! I looked at her before I knew it I screamed Beth! Laughter...
Eileen: She started laughing. I said, 'Oh my God. You're Beth!' Laughter.. I don't try to hide it. You can act like a mucky muck actor and act like you're all not influenced by it all, but these are the folks that you've been watching all of your life.
Shannon: That is so funny!
Eileen: And Peter Reckell, he's not bad to look at either!
Shannon: How has it been working with John (Victor), Brandon (Shawn) and Martha (Belle)?
Eileen: It's been great! Funny enough, the other day we were doing a scene and Brandon came over to me and said 'You know, it is not hard to hate you right now!' Laughter. Because I was being so mean. Everyone there is really on their game. John Aniston is a lovely man. I hadn't done any scenes with him yet (but my character does work for him) and I walked up to him in the hallway and said, 'Hi, my name is Eileen'. I play Beverly and I work for you. He said 'Oh, well it's good to know who is doing my bidding!'
Shannon: That sounds like a Victor Kiriakis statement!
Eileen: It was really, really great! They are really like a family. They invited me to have lunch with them the other day and it was really nice. Ironically, DAYS is on her in LA at 1 o'clock and I am usually home for lunch at that time (as actors we usually audition all day and take lunch break in the middle before going back out). For about the past year or so I have been watching it on and off catching bits and pieces here and there. I didn't really know all of the characters, so I wasn't getting heavily involved, but I was just kind of watching. You know, Kristian Alfonso is a wonderful actress. I would try and catch her and Peter Reckell and see what was going on with them. Then all of a sudden I get a part on the show!
Shannon: I know the fans have noticed, but have you noticed specific difference in the writing style now that Hogan Sheffer has taken over the reins from James E. Reilly?
Eileen: The long time actors have actually commented on that. Some of the characters recently came back to the show. It definitely seems that there is a learning curve happening.sorting out the styles of writing. All the kinks are getting worked out quick and they are putting out the best show that can be put out.
Shannon: Well it seems like the fans are taking hold to it so far.
Eileen: That's great!
Shannon: Well, you know, DAYS has a very, very loyal fan base. It spans back generations (just like you with AMC). It is like a family thing.
Eileen: You know, I just got an email from my cousin and it is so weird. You think that someone might not be that interested in something or whatever, but she emailed me and it was in all caps like she was screaming at me! She informed me in that email that Peter Reckell is the father of all of her Cabbage Patch Dolls. Laughter.
Shannon: Laughter.. That is hilarious!
Eileen: So, I'm going to Tampa to see my family this week and it should be interesting when I get there. She is one of these gals that are really not influenced by anything but she lost her marbles when she found out that I was on the show. Laughter.
Shannon: So, I guess you get to watch the debut with your family?
Eileen: Yes, I do.
Shannon: That will be special for you.
Eileen: Yes, it will. You know, I do a lot of commercials and guest spots on shows, but this is something with a bit of an ark and a life to it. It's great!
Shannon: I was reading what Betty White said about joining The Bold and the Beautiful recently. I think she was referring to her assistant and her house keeper. They finally consider her a star now that she has made it to daytime.
Shannon: So, you haven't really made it big until you have landed on a daytime soap! Laughter. That could definitely be why your cousin is having this reaction.
Eileen: It is a riot!
Shannon: So you are going home to Tampa?
Eileen: Yes, my family goes back 150 years there; they were cigar rollers. We all ended up in New York (I was born there) but now they have migrated back to Tampa.
Shannon: Down towards Ybor City? I have been there once.
Eileen: That's exactly where we're from!
Shannon: That was a very nice area.
Eileen: It is great. All of the little shops and cigar factories..
Shannon: Don't they like close down the streets on Saturday nights..and have police men on horses etc?
Eileen: Oh yes. It is like Bourbon Street there now.
Shannon: Wow, it's been years since I have been. I'm going to have to head back down there and check it out. Are you going to Tampa for the holidays?
Eileen: Yes, I will be there through January 1.
(Find out what Eileen is up to for her Christmas Holidays and what she wishes for all DOOL fans, December 24 on the main page of Soaps.com. The article is titled, "Interviews with the soap stars: Holiday Plans!")
Shannon: If you are having a really bad day and have to choose one thing to munch down on, what would be your junk food of choice?
Eileen: I love you. I love you! I go to McDonald's and I get a Big Mac. I come home and I eat a Big Mac and I drink a big glass of water to wash it down because it is one of the worst things that you can eat but I love it! That is literally what I do when I am having a bad day. No soda, no fries, just the Big Mac. If they have the 2 for 1. I may go for the second one!
Shannon: Wow, that's a really bad day huh? Laughter..
Eileen: Laughter.. Yeah, that's one of those days when they say Don't call us, we'll call you! Laughter..
Shannon: Laughter.. Eileen, it has been great talking with you today. I hope you have a very happy Holiday and enjoy the time with your family.
Eileen: Thank you so much! Take care.
Thanks so much to Mona from Eileen's Management Team for making this interview possible. Soaps.com and myself wishes Eileen continued success and look forward to seeing her in Salem!
