A somber Bobby, Sue Ellen, Christopher and John Ross land their helicopter in Mexico. Sgt. Ruiz leads them inside the hotel and tells him it appears JR was shot during a burglary. John Ross insists JR was in Abu Dhabi, but she tells them he arrived in Mexico from Abu Dhabi two nights ago for quail hunting. The local cartels have grown in recent years but Bobby refuses to believe JR would deal with them. But John Ross refuses to believe he was killed by a mugger either and asks that they be taken to the body.

The morgue is piled with bodies and one of them is JR. Later, Bobby turns on John Ross who swears all he knows was that JR said he had a plan that was to be his masterpiece. Then he heard the gunshots. Bobby sees Carlos, who promises to find out what JR was doing in Mexico and personally stay by JR’s side until he delivers him home.

Emma is brushing her horse at Southfork when Ryland pulls up. He apologizes and promises to let her visit her mom as much as she wants if she comes home. She is offended by his choice of words and Ann asks him to leave before she calls the cops. He wonders if she’ll shoot him again when Drew flashes his gun and pipes up that he will. Ryland tells Ann to let Bobby know he has no idea what he has started. After, Bobby and the rest arrive from Mexico. Bobby brushes Gary off and goes to his office. Later, Sue Ellen finds John Ross in JR’s room. He refuses to rest until he finds JR’s master plan. She is going to keep working on Gary to get the oil turned back on – no reason to stop business because JR is gone. John Ross is shocked at her coldness and leaves. Alone, she looks at an envelope addressed to her, then at JR’s booze.

At the wake at Southfork, Ray and Lucy swap JR stories and try to comfort Bobby, who acts cold. He moves on to Dallas bigwigs Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban and Mayor Mike Rawlings, who all have a JR story. Meanwhile, Sue Ellen chats about being married to him with his other exes, Cally and Mandy. They agree he was bad as hell but as hot as they come and admire Sue Ellen for making her peace with JR. She admits it was easy after all of his lying and cheating. Later, John Ross accuses Pamela of putting her father ahead of their deal and then catches Emma alone with a bottle of Clonazepam. He takes one and she takes one too. Back downstairs Sue Ellen tells Gary she has never wanted a drink more. Cliff Barnes suddenly busts in to loudly pay his disrespects. John Ross accuses him of killing JR. He wishes he had. Without JR there is nothing keeping him from taking the Ewings down. Pamela gets him to leave, but another drunk well-wisher pipes up that JR was a prick. Chris knocks him out and a full-on brawl breaks out. Later, Chris promises to help John Ross avenge JR’s death. Ann brings Bobby a drink as Carlos and his affiliates arrive. He has Sgt. Ruiz with him, as well as the medical examiner. They affirm JR was the victim of a robbery and the killer might not likely be found. John Ross calls bullsh*t and leaves. Emma follows him outside and they go at it in the back seat of a car. Back inside, Bobby and Ann get ready for bed and she begs him to talk to her. He snaps about her omission about her daughter. He has been very tolerant of her but she has made him feel isolated and insignificant. She will do anything to make things right. He walks away.

Sue Ellen lets herself into JR’s room and opens the letter he left her - but slugs down a drink before reading it, then a bigger one.

The family gathers at the gravesite for the funeral, talking turns to speak. Christopher speaks about JR letting him in when his mom left. Sue Ellen speaks of meeting JR as Miss Texas and falling hopelessly in love with the charming scoundrel. But he was enough to drive a girl to drink. She reveals she got drunk last night to read a letter he left her. She reads it to them now. He loved her the moment he saw her and loves her now more than he ever did. When he got back to Dallas he wanted to have dinner with her. Yes, she would have said. He was the love of her life and she breaks down by his casket. Bobby takes her back to her seat, then speaks. It has always been easy for him to do good because he could count on JR to do bad. Now he is lost. JR is lowered into the ground and later, when everyone is gone, John Ross sites alone while Chris watches over him. Bum shows up with a message from JR and hands over a box.

At Southfork, Bum tells them JR really was in Abu Dhabi closing an oil deal. But he was also trying to find Christopher’s mother. Then he was in Mexico following a lead on Harris Ryland. He knew what he was investigating was dangerous and wanted them to have these things. He hands over a case to John Ross. It has a gun in it, with a note that tells him Barnes is coming after him and would bet his last nickel Barnes and Harris will join forces to destroy them. Use what he has given them to take from Barnes what he has taken from the Ewings. When he has done that Bobby will know what to do. Bum then gives Bobby a letter. Bobby reads it silently and pulls Bum aside. He tells Bum to pay off whoever he has to so that it still appears JR was killed by a mugger. And when the time comes they will take care is this as a family. He goes to JR’s room and pours a big drink. He knew JR had another one up his sleeve, and it’s a good one.

Hollie’s thoughts:

Could there be any more fitting way to send off Larry Hagman, who died November 23, 2012 from complications of cancer, and the incomparable JR Ewing than reviving a "Who shot JR" storyline? Perfect. Tears were flowing during the funeral, which brought back a number of people fans of the old series will recognize. Even the somber theme song to introduce the episode was so appropriate for the man who built Southfork. There will never be another one like him. Oh, and Drew? I like his style of good old fashioned muscle around the ranch. It was also great to see Chris and John Ross come together after the brawl at the funeral. Ewings taking care if Ewings. And now we have a full-on murder mystery on our hands. Who shot JR? Let it drag out all season for a big old cliffhanging finale like they did in the past. We’ll wait. John Ross caught up with the ladies of the two men teamed up to screw him. Awesome. Bobby knows.
