Born Larry Hageman in Fort Worth, Texas, to actress Mary Martin and a district attorney, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his grandmother after his parents divorced. She died when he was 12 and he moved back with his mom.
He went to Bard College in New York State, then had his first stage tryout with the Margo Jones Theatre-in-the-Round in Dallas. He then appeared in the New York City Center production of "Taming the Shrew." In his early twenties he moved to England as a member of the cast of his mother's stage show, "South Pacific."
He enrolled in the U.S. Air Force, where he produced and directed several series. Later, Larry returned to New York City for a series of Broadway and off-Broadway plays before the start of his television career in 1961. He starred in "The Edge of Night" for two years before landing the lead in the now-iconic NBC sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie" as astronaut Anthony Nelson.
In 1978, he began portraying JR Ewing on "Dallas," one of the most-watched shows of all time and the "Who shot JR?" episode remains one of the highest rated of all time.
In July 1995, he had a liver transplant and one year later he served as the National Spokesperson for the 1996 U.S. Transplant Games presented by the National Kidney Foundation. An adamant non-smoker, he served as the chairperson of the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout", from 1981 to 1992.
He is a vegetarian and has two children with his wife, who has advanced Alzheimer's Disease.
