38th Annual Daytime Emmy Interviews. Part 1.

38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, Tuesday, June 21 2011

    Stephanie Gatschet (Lori Wilson/Soaps.com)
    On the red carpet.

The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were held on June 19 at the Las Vegas Hilton. Soaps.com caught up with several of the nominees and presenters before they headed into the show, as well as those who were just there to support the Daytime genre. Read on to find out what the actors had to say about the future of soaps, being in Vegas and what's next for their characters.

"All My Children's Stephanie Gatschet (Madison)

Soaps.com: How long did it take you to get ready today?

Stephanie: There were separate phases. I went to one hotel to get my hair and makeup done. That took a little over an hour and then I just had to go home and put my clothes on, so I would say a little over an hour.

Soaps.com: Did it take you a long time to figure out which dress to wear?

Stephanie: No. I actually happened upon this dress when I was shopping with my mom for a dress my mom needed and it was hanging on a rack all by itself, completely out of place. I saw it and I loved it and I tried it on and it fit and it didn’t need any alterations. It was the easiest dress I've ever had in my life.

Soaps.com: Nice! How do you like having the Emmys in Vegas?

Stephanie: I think it's fun. Vegas is a party so it's a perfect place to celebrate.

Soaps.com: What have you been doing since you've been here?

Stephanie: We went out to dinner last night. A bunch of us from "All My Children" went out to celebrate J.R. Martinez's [Brot] birthday, which was this week. And then we went out…one of the agencies threw a party, just kind of out on the town kind of stuff.

Soaps.com: Who are you rooting for tonight?

Stephanie: Everybody. I'm rooting for "All My Children" of course, for our show. I'm rooting, mainly for everyone to have a good time and celebrate the hard work that's been done by everybody.

"Days of our Lives" John Aniston (Victor)

Soaps.com: Are you having a good time?

    John: So far.

Soaps.com: Did you get in last night? Are you making a weekend of it?

    John: Last night.

Soaps.com: Do you enjoy having the Emmys here in Vegas or do you prefer them in Los Angeles?

John: I always like to come to Vegas.

    Eric Martsolf (Lori Wilson/Soaps.com)
Soaps.com: Do you gamble a little bit?

    John: A little bit.

    Soaps.com: What do you play?

John: I play blackjack. I play different games. A little bit of craps.

Soaps.com: There are big changes going on at "Days of our Lives." What will that mean for Victor?

John: We'll have to wait and see. I read my new scripts with bated breath.

Soaps.com: Are you excited about it?

    John: Yeah, I think so.

Soaps.com: Who are you pulling for tonight?

John: Well, James [Scott, EJ] of course and [Chandler Massey, Chad].

"Days of our Lives" Eric Martsolf (Brady)

Soaps.com: Are you having a good time?

Eric: How can I not? You know, it's a different kind of Emmys this year in the sense that we want to celebrate, but we also are mourning in a sense that we lost some shows. It's actually created a really good spirit amongst everybody. No one really seems to be competitive this year. It's more of a coming together of a whole Daytime community in a way that I don't think has really happened in a long time. It's a shame that it takes harmful events to bring people together, but I'm enjoying the feeling that…There's just no better show than the other this year. It's just Daytime. It's just celebrating it.

Soaps.com: What do you think about the future of "Days of our Lives?"

Eric: "Days of our Lives" is, we have a good contract intact right now. We are going to be on air definitely for a couple more years and if it's up to the powers that be, we're going to be on for decades and decades more to come. As long as a couple soaps stay on the air, there's always hope. I never say never in this industry. In my little nine years of being on Daytime, I've learned that the revolving door always happens and that the minute you think someone is gone…they're back and I think the show can do the same thing.

Soaps.com: And John [Drake Hogestyn] and Marlena [Deidre Hall] are coming back.

Eric: [with what I assumed was mock surprise] Did you hear that?

    Soaps.com: I did.

Eric: I had no idea. [smiles] I can neither confirm nor deny that. John Black needs to come back into town and set his son on fire. He needs to calm me down a little bit. Brady's been getting into some trouble lately.

    Soaps.com: Do you enjoy that?

Eric: I love it so much. I played Ethan Winthrop on "Passions" for such a long time and he did everything right. Moral. 'I want to do the right thing.' He obeyed every law. He wouldn’t even jaywalk, so playing Brady is a nice departure from that. It's fun to finally try a little wrong.

Soaps.com: Are you hoping that continues then? Staying on the bad side of things?

Eric: Oh, yeah. He doesn’t show any signs of stopping lately. I can tell you that. He's going to be bad for a long time.

    Melissa Archer (Lori Wilson/Soaps.com)
"One Life to Live's" Melissa Archer (Natalie)

    Soaps.com: You look beautiful.

    Melissa: Thank you.

Soaps.com: Did it take a long time to pick out your dress?

Melissa: No. It actually didn’t, believe it or not. I did it in a day.

Soaps.com: Are you having a good time?

Melissa: I have the most amazing shoes. Sorry. [She laughs, as she points them out]

Soaps.com: Where are your shoes from?

    Melissa: These are Jimmy Choo.

Soaps.com: Do you enjoy having the Emmys in Vegas?

Melissa: I do like having it in Vegas. It's a lot of fun here. I don't know. It makes it feel young and fresh, yet still has that elegance to it. There's so much glitz and glamour here, but there's so much more…not more, but it's fun. It's different.

Soaps.com: How are you feeling knowing "One Life to Live" is ending?

Melissa: It's bittersweet. It's sad to see something go away that has been there for so long…but at the same time, I want to make good of that and take it as an opportunity. We have an amazing ending, I think, coming. I think it's going to be really fun to watch. Really fun to play.

Soaps.com: Do you know how Natalie's story is wrapping up?

Melissa: I don't, but I've heard good things.

Soaps.com: Will it make the fans happy?

Melissa: I don't know exactly, but if I were to guess, I'd say yes. That's just my opinion. [laughs]

    Freddie Smith (Lori Wilson/Soaps.com)
"Days of our Lives" Freddie Smith (Sonny)

Soaps.com: You're just coming on to the show as Justin [Wally Kurth] and Adrienne's [Judi Evans] son.

Freddie: I am. I've been working on it for like two months, but the first episode airs in four days on Thursday, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Soaps.com: What can you tell us about your character's introduction to the viewers?

Freddie: He comes back to town. He traveled the world and he went to college for a little bit. Now he's taking a break and coming back, meeting the family, reconnecting with friends and family. He's going to mix it up a little bit. It's really fun to play that.

Soaps.com: Who have you been working with so far?

Freddie: Literally, everyone. I came in and like every day I get a new script and I’m like, wow, new people. I pretty much worked with everyone on the show already. It's been great.

Soaps.com: Is this your first experience in Daytime?

    Freddie: Yes.

Soaps.com: What do you think of it so far?

Freddie: It's so different. I can't even describe it. Everything is so…you get one or two takes, so everything is very fresh and you just roll. It's a well oiled machine. You go in there, knock your stuff out and go home. It's ridiculous, but it's fun. Keeps you on your toes.

Soaps.com: And this is your first Daytime Emmys?

Freddie: Yes. And in Vegas, so I'm really excited.

Soaps.com: Are you having a good time so far?

    Freddie: Absolutely.
