Soaps.com's Exclusive Chat with B&B's Kyle Lowder! Part I

    Monday, May 12 2008

    Kyle Lowder (Soaps.com)
As Soaps.com readers know, Kyle Lowder (Rick Forrester) was in Brampton, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto) this past Saturday, meeting fans, posing for pictures and signing autographs. I was able to land some one-on-one time with Kyle, who, by the way, is much better looking than Rick! Wink, wink! Interestingly, when I came into the room, Kyle was engaged in his first encounter with a Coffee Crisp chocolate bar! (FYI Americans, Coffee Crisp is a well-known Canadian candy bar consisting of chocolate, wafers and infused with a hint of coffee taste) As he waxed eloquent about the unexpected treat, I settled in for our chat! Kyle was charming, laid-back, and was very generous with his time, not only answering my questions, but also some from Soaps.com readers!

Candace: What is keeping you busy outside of work? Do you have any projects you'd like to talk about?

Kyle: "I'm currently working on, and very much involved with, my music. B&B definitely takes up 99% of my time, well, 98% of my time, and the other 1%, I'm desperately trying to find time with my wife, just as she does with me because she's on Days of Our Lives, and the other 1% of the time I'm in the studio with my producer and we're trying to get some music done. The music is at kylelowder.net - so let me know what you think!

Candace: The website is awesome, and your music and voice are amazing! Soaps.com readers have been asking a lot of questions about what you have been doing with your singing. Can they get your music? Is it available to download?

Kyle: "I'll take this opportunity to address that. It takes almost a year, for an artist who has all of their time to dedicate to it, to make an album. So for me, it is difficult to - quite literally - fit it in! We're chipping away at the project where we can, and, at the end of the day, we hopefully want to get some label backing so we can get a little bit more money into the project and things like that. All details aside, it's one of those things that I want to do right, because it's the first one and you want to make sure it's the best it can possibly be! In the meantime, I've created the website to show what I'm working on, and say, 'here's a couple of projects I'm working on'. But in terms of finishing the album, I don't have a set time, the bottom line is that I just want to make sure it's perfect, or as close to perfect, as it can be, and that just takes time. Songs are not available for download right now, because we want to deliver them as a package.

Candace: The Bold and the Beautiful had your character singing last year on the show - it seemed like quite an undertaking as a storyline, what with you and Mackenzie singing, and the contest, and having the American Idol's Constantine Maroulis performing and involved. What was that whole experience like from your perspective and is it something you'd like to see happen again on the show?

Kyle: "It was interesting! Constantine was a fun guy to be around, and he loves to talk music, so we talked a lot about music, and New York, where he is from and where I'm from. It was a good time and the story was a lot of fun to shoot, but in the end, unfortunately, I believe the fans just didn't connect to it, and that's okay. It doesn't take away from the fact that I had probably one of the best times I've ever had at work. We were in a recording studio, we were recording music, the big sets they were building for the shows - the experience was wonderful. I would love to do another storyline about music, but based on the feedback from the last storyline, it's just not in the cards right now."

    Kyle and Candace (Soaps.com)
Candace: You recently sang the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium - what was that like?

Kyle: It was fun! It was my second time doing it, so it was a lot easier. It's actually one of the hardest places to sing because the stadium's so big, and they have a massive delay, so when you say something in the microphone, then three seconds later you hear it like an echo. So you have to wear airtight earpieces that you put in, so all you can hear is you! When you put them in you can't hear the crowd or anything, it's so silent, and all you hear is your own voice. So that's a little daunting, because no one wants to listen to themself that intently! (laughs) So that was interesting - and it's a lot of people! It is a thrill. I love being down on the field. I wanted to be a professional baseball player when I was a kid. So it was really fun walking out there - it was neat."

Candace: You were a gymnast too, weren't you?

Kyle: "Yes, in college. I didn't do all the events, though, because I was too tall. The team picture was funny, it was like, '5'7", 5'6", 5'7", 5'8", 6'1", 5'6"…' (laughs, explaining the height difference) I did floor and rings.

Candace: Bradley Bell and the writing team at The Bold and the Beautiful have been nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series Writing this year. What are your thoughts on that?

Kyle: "I'm very proud of him! They've got a lot of really good things brewing! They got nominated this year, but I think the best stuff is yet to come - I've seen some of their outlines. I'm really happy for Brad. He's Bill Bell's son - it's a huge shadow to come from, and I think he's done a really amazing job of coming out from that. His writing is very natural, and in my opinion, he does very well with what he has to work with - basically 22 minutes of air time, 20 contract players and 99% of them are related! (laughs) So to be able to create 5 episodes a week in terms of limited resources of what you can do with the story, I think he does a phenomenal job! I can't imagine how they do it!"

I'm surprised that the feedback from fans regarding Kyle singing on the show wasn't better. I absolutely loved it! I keep waiting for him to sing again.
