    As The World Turns Cancelled.

    Tuesday, December 08 2009

    (CBS)
What fans have been fearing has just been made official. As The World Turns, currently the longest running soap on television, has been cancelled. This will be the final season for the series on CBS Television. Its run will end in September 2010, ending its 54-year run on the network.

Executive Producer Chris Goutman made this statement: "Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades. We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show's loyal audience."

Meanwhile, Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. (the company which produces the series) said that, "As The World Turns has been a cornerstone of our business and a tremendous asset to the company. We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of ATWT."

Created by soap pioneer Irna Phillips in 1956, the series was at the top of the ratings from 1959 until 1971, after which it began a slow decline. Grim prospects for the series were increased when its sister P&G soaps, Guiding Light was cancelled earlier this year.

Soaps.com will keep you informed of more updates to this story as news is released. We send all of our best to the hardworking people in front of, and behind the cameras, in this difficult time.

This is a plain diaster. CBS is going to the dogs in daytime. After the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful, there is nothing left to watch on CBS without ATWT. This is the worst news ever!!!!!!!!

OMG!!! This is horrible!!! I grew up with this show like I did Guiding Light!!! I'm only 36 but, I can remember being in elementary school and my aunt picking me and my cousin up from school and the radio would be tuned into as the world turns....I've watched this show with my late mother and grandmother ever since I could watch t.v.!!!! I want to cry right now....Why not take B&B off instead....that's a horrible soap!!!! I just can't believe this....This may force me to give up all my cbs shows all together...day and night time shows!!!!

WHAT!!! This is my favorite soap! I tape it everyday!! My mother has been an avid fan and turned me on to it. She still says that I was a baby and she with my father were watching ATWT when it was interuppted to tell the world of JFK's shooting! Even my kids and husband know that story. This is NOT fair to all of the die hard fans!!!!!!!

This is a sad day, for the soap world. I have watch this show starting when I was 15 years old, I started watching with my Grandmother, it was her favorite.

I hope they find another place to air show, this is really a bad day. Here is hoping something good happens for this soap.

Carly and Jack will live forever in our hearts.

    peace out.

Here are my thoughts: Guiding Light and As The World Turns were two great soaps. But there comes a time in life when everything must change. They were on for years, now its time to do a new thing. Do some new Soaps stemming from the old stories but suppose you get new young writers, that would pick up a nice storyline considering the new people would be the new kids in town. You know, some generational stuff. Like Lisa great grand children now in college and coming home to the family fortune to create a new life for their children and their childrens children. What about Ed's son's and daughter's children coming along with their children all grown starting a new life in town. Its so much new stuff, they don't have to be doctors etc, let some IT family come along now. If not, Soaps will be off the air for good, then what will we do??????? Just a thought.
