When Simon came to Oakdale, he was searching for a family heirloom. His great-grandfather had given his Beloved a necklace, which Simon wanted for himself because of its value. Simon saw Lily Snyder and thought she must be related to his Beloved since she looked so much like her. Simon began to fall in love with Lily, but apparently, Simon's sister, Celia, also was trying to get the diamond necklace. All became shipwrecked on an island, and when Celia tried (unsuccessfully) to kill Simon and Lily, she escaped on a raft that Simon had built, but it soon capsized. Celia was gone and so was the diamond. In the meantime, Simon and Lily were rescued and they both were glad to return to Oakdale.
Lily wasn't free to be with Simon since she was already married. One night Simon got drunk and he made love to Katie Peretti. He was afraid he would be deported, and because he wanted to be near Lily, he and Katie got married. After Simon and Katie got married, Katie tried everything to make him happy. Simon finally realized he did have feelings for Katie. However, when Simon, Katie and Henry Coleman opened a detective agency, Simon left Katie soon after that. She realized he left her because he was running from the law. He was accused of murdering a man named Bartleby, and he didn't want Katie involved out of fear for her safety. Katie thought Simon had gone to Australia and set out to look for him. Mike Kasnoff wanted to accompany her to Australia, but Katie was afraid he was starting to have feelings for her. She couldn't deal with this now and tried to slip away without him knowing about it. The plane was delayed and Mike found her at the airport waiting. Once again, she objected to him joining her, but despite her protest, he went along anyway. Once there, they found themselves taken hostage by Bartleby's brother, Mordecai. Mike managed to free himself just in time to rescue Katie from a bomb explosion. Katie knew Simon was there also and was told the DNA found at the explosion was Simon's. Fortunately, Simon wasn't killed in the bomb explosion, and he returned to Oakdale and Katie. He wanted Katie to come with him but she was already engaged to Mike Kasnoff. Simon left town but returned months later to rescue Katie once again. She was in a mental institution. He again wanted her to go away with him, but Katie said a goodbye to Simon and he left without her.
Mike and Katie were married and on a cruise ship for their honeymoon when she learned Simon's room was next door to theirs. Simon tried to win Katie's affections but she was in love with Mike. They returned to Oakdale. Mike and Katie have had their share of problems, but they always manage to keep their heads above water.
Simon left town again, but returned. It seemed that this time, he was falling in love with Carly Tenney Snyder. She was working for him and going through a divorce herself. She leaned on Simon during this difficult time. They confessed their love for each other and soon became a couple. Simon had a one-night stand with Katie, but it was over with as quickly as it started. Soon after Simon's one-night stand with Katie, he and Carly ended up being accused of stealing a diamond from the prince of Leonia. Carly and Simon are now on the run.

At home, Katie is packing. Simon is surprised to see that she is hardly packing light. He urges her to hurry up so they can get to her party. She's sure it will horrible and wishes she hadn't let Margo talk her into sticking around for this.
Craig arrives at the Lakeview while Henry and Margo get the party together. He doesn't think they are doing enough and already knows Katie will never fall for this. Margo asks him to convince Simon to convince Katie to stay. Simon and Katie arrive and tell them that they're moving to New York. "There's a broken heart for every light on Broadway," Craig says. Henry brings in the bubbly. Jack and Carly show up before they can toast. Jack reminds Katie that Simon is a fugitive. Craig asks him if he is back with Carly already and then brings up Janet. Margo changes the topic and Henry tries to put a positive spin on things for Katie. They open her gifts. Emma gave her the Snyder family Bible. Margo and Henry got her luggage. Since it is so obvious, they all admit that they are there to talk her out of leaving. Henry starts a slideshow presentation on her life and her many marriages. He talks about how talented and funny she is. "You are the heart and soul of the town," he says. Craig whispers to Simon that he will be breaking the whole town's heart. This is too much for Katie. She knows they are all trying to make her feel guilty for wanting to leave and tries to escape. Margo unfurls a map of all the places that Katie's mom took her when she was little. Katie can't remember half of the places. She's still unimpressed.
Jack takes Craig aside and tells him he can't let them serenade Katie out of town. Carly thinks they shouldn't interfere. Jack says they should hit Simon from both sides. He begins laying into the Australian. Katie rushes in and tries to stop them. She tells them that this whole party is just a big set up. She accuses them of being 'clingy, selfish' people and argues that none of them have any right to control her or exploit Brad's memory to do so. They tell her how much they love her. She says that she doesn't need their protection. Simon argues that his love for Katie is what she needs right now and the sooner he gets her away from them, the better. As the party dies, Janet shows up looking for Jack. He's gone. She wishes Katie the best and runs off.
On the street, Carly tells Jack that this is all really about him trying to get back at Simon for taking her away. He admits it. She urges him to go back and say goodbye. They go inside and Jack says he won't let his personal feelings get in the way anymore. He promised his brother that he would look out for Jacob and he intends to do that. Jack promises the baby that he will always come running if he needs him. Katie gives him a hug. As Simon gathers the gifts, Katie leafs through the Snyder Bible. She turns to him and tells him that she can't leave. Katie doesn't want her son to grow up without a stable home. He agrees to stay if she wants. She can't ask him to stay and insists that he doesn't need to be chained to her. "Let me try to do this for you," he begs. She's sure he would end up hating her and tells him neither of them need this.
At home, Katie tells Simon she wants to sell up and move. He admits that he actually likes the idea of sticking around Oakdale. She insists that this is the right thing to do. If she stays there, she is just going to drown in sympathy. He warns her that a life with him is a life on the run. She'd rather tempt fate than be haunted by it. He wants her to take some time and think this over. Katie is eager to go... today, or she might change her mind. Simon thinks she is just trying to run away from her fear of a life without Brad. She convinces him that he needs a new start as much as she does. Henry walks in and asks what he's interrupting. They have him sit down and explain that they are moving away. Henry needs a drink. She can't become a whole person again while she's surrounded by memories of Brad. Henry stammers and hyperventilates when she announces she is leaving today. "For the first time in my life, I'm actually speechless," he sputters. Katie asks him to be happy for her. Henry threatens to feed Simon to the pigeons if he doesn't look after her. She gives him a hug. "Here's looking at you kid," he says. After he leaves, Simon tells Katie he just wants to be with her. Jacob cries. Simon wonders where they're going. She decides to go to New York and tells the baby that this is the right thing to do.
Simon and Katie wander around town. He teases her for tearing up over every building they walk by. Margo, Henry and a cop walk over. Margo arrests Simon. Katie is outraged that they are doing this and defends Simon. He asks Margo to trust her sister's instincts and let her do what she feels she needs. "You're loving me so much I feel like I'm in a prison," Katie says. She needs to try and live for herself again and begs them to let her do this. Margo reluctantly gives in, but insists that Katie let her friends and family say goodbye to her first.
Katie and Simon go home. She's annoyed with Henry but he tells her to cut him some slack for caring so much. "Love doesn't have to be a prison," he says. She's knows that but she's still determined to leave.
