Kim Sullivan arrived at Oakdale to watch her sister, Jennifer marry a very handsome Bob Hughes. Kim was very envious of Jennifer for finding such a wonderful man. After the wedding, Kim left Oakdale to pursue her singing career. She married Jason Reynolds, but found herself to be a widow at an early age. She continued singing. On one occasion, Bob came down to Florida on a trip. During this point in Bob's marriage, Jennifer and Bob were not getting along. Bob was able to locate Kim. They talked and ended up making love. Bob went back to Oakdale and Jennifer gave him the great news, she was pregnant. They worked things out and tried again. Meanwhile, Kim couldn't get her mind off Bob and what happened so she went to Oakdale, hoping that Bob and Jennifer decided to divorce. She was devastated to discover they had worked things out and Jennifer was having a baby. Kim had some news of her own; she was pregnant with Bob's child too. But she didn't want to upset her sister and stand in the way of reconciliation. She set her sights on Bob's enemy at the time, John Dixon. They soon married, and when it came time for her to deliver the baby, she was told her baby had died. She would later learn that her little girl was alive and a family in England had adopted her.
Kim's marriage to John was not very good. She wasn't in love with him and didn't want anything to do with him. She was determined to leave John, but he was in an accident and put in a wheelchair. She vowed to stay with him until he recovered. Of course, once he healed, he faked his paralysis in order to hang on to her. She developed amnesia one time and was unable to remember anything about her life. John told her she was his wife and they loved each other. Kim found out that she was pregnant and eventually got her memory back. As soon as she did, she left John. John had a terrible drinking problem, and when his habit started interfering with his work, the hospital suspended him. She fought with John constantly over custody of their son, Andy.
Kim eventually found herself free to marry the love of her life, Bob. Bob had lost Jennifer in a car accident and had just come out of a marriage with Miranda Marlowe. They were destined to be together. On one occasion, Bob found himself caught up in an affair with Dr. Susan Stewart. After Kim threw him out of their home, she reconsidered, after a sincere Bob apologized and vowed never to stray again. They had a child together named Chris. Their life was full, and Bob continued to provide Oakdale with outstanding dedication as a physician. Kim supported her husband ever step of the way. She pursued a career herself, ended up hosting her own show, and eventually became co-owner of WOAK-TV. Women of Oakdale confide in Kim for her advice and wisdom.

Bob and John kick Kim out of Chris' hospital room as they try to keep him alive. Reid rushes in to help and Kim is left weeping with Luke. Henry and Barbara arrive. Luke tips Henry off that Katie isn't there. Once Chris has stabilized, the doctors tell him he's in very bad shape. Chris refuses the treatment that John suggests and won't be hooked up to a machine. He insists on being treated like just another patient and not being bumped ahead in line for a transplant.
In the hospital waiting room, Barbara sits with Kim. She tells her about being a newlywed and tries to think positively. Kim walks back into Chris' room and the doctors explain that he's refusing treatment. Katie and Henry arrive as Chris talks about how he doesn't want to be remembered struggling for his life. Kim tries to talk him around. "How dare you try to sacrifice yourself for me," Katie says. She tells him to listen to his doctors so they can have more time together. She accuses him of being a coward and tells him that no one who loves him wants to be spared this fight. Katie vows to sit at his bedside until he becomes healthy again and they can go dancing with Barb and Henry. He caves in and agrees to fight. Bob suddenly announces that a heart has become available in Bay City. Everyone is relieved.
Kim and Bob sit in his office. She wonders how this could have happened. He's sure John will do all he can and advises her to go home and rest.
Katie is at WOAK watching old recordings of her show with Chris. Kim shows up and asks why she isn't at the hospital. Katie admits that she's known for a few days but was scared to say or do anything. Kim says her son really needs her by his side. However, she's not sure that she's really ready to move on from Brad. If she really wants to help her son, she should consider staying away from him. Kim is terrified by her lack of control over this situation. She knows that Chris will never ask Katie to stay away and will let her suck all the strength out of him. Katie doesn't think she's being fair. Kim knows that and rails about how she wants to shake everyone to get things done. She asks Katie to stop refusing to make a choice and decide if she can take the pain ahead.
In the hall, Kim accuses Reid of being happy that her son is dying so he can get the chief of staff job. Reid insists that's not the case. Bob comes over and asks her to stop. She cries and Bob stands up for Reid, explaining that the doctor was looking after their son. She apologizes but Reid says it isn't necessary. Bob asks her to stay strong for their son's sake. Kim and Bob worry about each other. Tom calls and says that they have a lead on a donor.
Back at the hospital, Kim and Bob stand by their son's bed. Reid looks in at them. Luke approaches him and the doctor admits that he gave Katie the wrong advice before and told her not to run away. Luke's impressed. "Sometimes I surprise myself," Reid says. Chris suddenly goes into cardiac arrest so all the doctors run in.
