"All My Children" had a history of telling socially relevant stories. In 1987, they introduced Cindy Parker, who had contracted AIDS from her former needle sharing drug user husband Fred. Not everyone accepted Cindy, but Stuart fell in love with and married her. Stuart also adopted her son Scott.
Sadly, Cindy succumbed to the disease in 1989, but before that happened, she was attacked by a hate group, led by one of Pine Valley's prominent residents. The group set Cindy's house on fire, but when this character learned Cindy and Scott were in the house, he/she ran in to save the mother and son. While rescuing them, he/she ended up in a coma for over three months.
