Julia lived in Texas with her parents and became involved in a scandalous affair with a married man. The Santos' sent her to live with sister, Maria, in hopes of straightening out her life.
During a tornado that hit Pine Valley, Julia was inured by a falling chandelier and left with a gaping cut on her face. Maria, a neurosurgeon, stitched the injury, but not with the perfection of a plastic surgeon. The result was a disfiguring scar that caused Julia to run away in shame.
In Center City, Julia met and fell in love with Noah Keefer. He saved her from a known drug dealer, who had already raped her. In his attempt to catch Louie Greco, Noah accidentally killed the man and was found guilty of murder. Julia helped him escape to Jamaica. Eventually they returned to Pine Valley, where Noah's murder charge was overturned. The two wed, and looked forward to a normal life.
Unfortunately, the drug dealer's friends followed the two to Pine Valley and Julia nearly lost her life when someone took a shot at her. She survived, but later lost her father in an accident meant to kill her. Someone severed the brakes on her car. To escape death, Noah and Julia were entered into the Federal Witness Protection Plan, given new names and moved to the San Francisco Bay area. They lost all contact with their loved ones, although Julia did resurface briefly after Maria was killed in a plane crash. She warned her brother, Mateo, that the aircraft disaster wasn't an accident. She didn't have time to tell him anything else.
Julia was given permission to return one more time when Maria returned from the dead, but it wasn't until years later that she returned for good, grieving the death of Noah. She and Di Henry teamed up to end the reign of terror headed by "The Dragon", Garret Williams. Brief romantic encounters with Ryan and David failed, but as Julia continued to heal from losing Noah, she found love with a younger man, Jamie Martin. After a brief separation because of Julia's doubts about their age difference, Jamie convinced her it didn't matter and moved into Wildwind with her. The home has transformed into a couples commune, as Di, Del, Amanda, Jonathan, and Aidan have all taken up residence there as well.
While Jamie supports his parents in their search for Emma, their baby girl lost at birth, Julia has taken charge of the little daughter of her best friends who were in a car accident on Christmas. The father died of injuries he sustained, and later, her mother died, leaving custody of the girl to Julia.
Julia enjoyed the role of mom to Kathy but the little girl placed a strain on her relationship with Jamie; they soon broke up. Julia dated Jack Montgomery for a while, but nothing came of that friendship.
At Jesse and Angie's recommittment ceremony, Julia was shot by Papal - Rob Gardner. Her injuries were severe and she died. As she was dying, Dixie's ghost appeared to tell her that Kathy would be okay.
